Those stairs!
Stopped in for drinks and sat at the bar. Drinks were good - not too strong or weak. Service was quick. Bathrooms were clean. But why oh why do they put all those weird stair combinations at the side entrance? One step down, then two steps down, then two steps up... are they trying to make us trip after drinking at the bar!?

Never Disappointed!
St. James Gate is a great neighborhood pub. It's a breath of fresh air when considering the other bars on the block. The service is great. All of the bar tenders are prompt and professional. If you are looking for a comfortable spot that feels like an extension of your living room, this is the place to go. The UWS was truly in need of a place like this.

Ok Food, Poor Service
The Food at this place was average, though it took a while for it to come out. The space is a cramped and oddly designed one which can make it uncomfortable to sit and difficult to catch the eye of a waitress. The service was atrocious with the food taking incredibly long, overcharges on our bill and a waitress that was unclear on how to correct the bill when the mistake was pointed out. Ultimately the restaurant overcharged my credit card and was forced to give me cash to make up the difference. I will not go back and I would be surprised if the restaurant was successful barring serious changes.

not great
this place is becoming frattier by the day. Went there the other night only to see one of the windows broken and that cheesy green "Irish Pub" sign hanging in the window. Once inside, the more mature UWS residents seem to have given way to those more interested in the sports games. Food was okay, nothing astounding. The problem with St. James Gate is it tries to be everything to all people. It's pretty hard to call yourself an authentic Irish Pub when you fill the place with big screen tvs and signage that looks like it came from the Blarney Stone.

Is this NY?
As others have said this pub could be easily over the pond! Great staff, fast service but did not rush us along. Great drinks, the corned beef and cabbage was excellent. My daughter had the sheppards pie, was not what she thought it would be. It was like a chili with carrotts and she was expecting meat corn and potatoe, so I finished it and it was quite different, but good. A couple of Jamesons and I was ready for a night and the museum.

Great Pub on the UWS
Went there last weekend and have been wishing there was one on the UES ever since. The food was great, I had the Irish Breakfast. The drinks were wonderful. I had a Bloody Mary...made fresh by the bartender. Our waitress was sweet and cheerful. The place was packed and we still got good service. Go check it out for brunch, lunch, or dinner! Great little neighborhood gem!!!

Love this place
Great neighborhood pub, truly in the English / Irish pub nightlife style. Good place to chat as the music volume is under control. Excellent staff.
