    not coming back here

    I was very disappointed in this restaurant - both in quality of food and in quality of service. Overall I found that food is overwhelmingly rich even for winter time... If you expect nice Mediterranean food here - forget it... I ordered appetizer "Rabbit Sott'olio with roasted carrots and arugula"... How can you go wrong with rabbit! The dish looked nice, but that was about it... I could not even finish it - rabbit, concentrated at the bottom of dish, was practically swimming in fat. One has to dry it out before eating. I ordered a salad - "Winter Green salad, spiced beets, walnuts, pecorino" and it was so-so. I expected it to be very delicate in taste, similar to what I had in Italy. Instead, vinegar was overpowering, beets cut in big chunks... Unimpressed. Couple of pastas ("Baked Taralle" and "Strascinari with braised duck leg") that we ordered for the table also turned out to be very rich. Service - I found it irritating when waiter comes around every 5 minutes to ask if anything else we want to order. Very pushy. Wines are too expensive. In short, no, not coming again.

    A total delight

    A week before my friends from Boston came in for the weekend, I tried to make a reservation at Spasso on opentable.com. Nothing was available until 10:30, so I called directly and was cheerfully given a 7:00 table. Imagine my chagrin when New York Magazine gave it a decidedly tepid review a few days later. Just another lesson in not paying attention to "negative" reviews. Our whole experience was wonderful. We were seated at the window, and that seemed to mitigate what might have been a good deal of noise. Our server was delightful, giving luscious descriptions of his favorite dishes, and answering all our questions cheerfully. He stopped by the table frequently to make sure all was going well. And it was: the food was delicious and wonderfully inventive. One of my dining companions, a professional chef at a very well-know Italian restaurant in Cambridge, MA, was particularly enthusiastic. Best of all, the prices are exceptionally reasonable by New York standards; it would be easy to have a lovely meal there for under $40 (not including wine). Highly recommencded, no matter what Adam Platt says!

    Mistreated parents on 40th anniversary

    I am a restaurant owner and a regular to Spasso. I actually live in the neighborhood. The food has always been great and I have always loved the service. Therefore when my parents had their 40th wedding anniversary I thought it would be the perfect place for them to go and celebrate. They booked the reservation three weeks in advance and they also confirmed. The day of the reservation there was an accident in the Holland Tunnel and my parents called them twice to tell them they would arrive late. Spasso told them, "its fine don't worry." Ultimately they arrived 15 minutes late. They then placed them at a table right at the entrance next to the bar. My father then said, "Can we please get another table?" They responded, "we had a better table for you, but gave it away, because you were late." My father then told them, "Is this how you treat somebody who makes a reservation three weeks in advance, coming from New Jersey and who also called you twice to let you know that we were stuck in traffic?" They then rudely smiled back without a word. My parents would've been happy to wait for a better table, but Spasso decided to be rude to them no less on their 40th wedding anniversary. In the past I have gotten nothing, but good service. I even wrote a good review about this place. However, the way they have behaved is completely inexcusable. I have no idea why they acted this way. I myself have never ever treated a customer like that especially one who has come in for their 40th wedding anniversary. I have brought many people there in all the times I have eaten. I made a point to call every single person and explain what happened to my parents. They were also all equally perturbed. Despite the good service and food I had in the past I will never return there again.

    Best meal I've ever had

    This is now my favorite restaurant in NY. The Stracciatella cheese appetizer is to die for. I've ordered this cheese in other restaurants but nowhere else is it this great. The pastas are homemade and delicious. The wait-staff is friendly and attentive. I've gone with large and small groups and the service is always spot on.

    Two Hour Time Limit is Enforced

    I made a 7:30 reservation on a Saturday night to celebrate my birthday with some friends. When we arrived promptly at 7:30, the hostess told us that they were running behind schedule and asked us to wait at the bar. The bar was packed, but we found a little place to stand by one of the server stations. A few minutes later, two seats at the bar opened up. When we tried to move to sit there, the hostess abruptly walked over and told us that we were not allowed to sit there as they were saving those seats for people that were eating at the bar. Thus, we had to walk back to the service station area of the bar and then were told by dining patrons that we were in the way of their table! Where were we supposed to go? Trying to put that behind us, we did manage to have some great wine, appetizers and meals. However, just as we were ready to order another bottle of wine and desserts, the same hostess walked over and rudely told my friend that we could only order if we agreed to leave in the next 15 minutes as they needed to turn our table and had a 2 hour time limit! Thankfully our server laughed it off and let us stay or the night would be been totally ruined. When I called this morning to explain what happened to the management, they did not seem to care. Bottom line...food is pretty good, but I prefer to dine at restaurants that make me feel welcome...not like I am part of an assembly line (especially when you're spending a few hundred dollars)!

    Great Pasta and More

    Went to Spasso the other night with a large group and had a fantasic experience. The house wine was surprisingly great and the price was right. For starters, we tried the tricolore salad, crispy eggplant, prosciutto and the stracciatella cheese. All were delicious. The meal only got better from there. The homemade pastas were off the charts. We had the Spaghetti Pomodoro, Mushroom Pansotti, Orecchiette with rock shrimp and crab, Baked Mozzarella Cannelloni and the Maccheroni with pork ragu. All were well prepared and a big hit at the table. Although everyone was stuffed, we managed to have the trout, the skirt steak, polenta and dessert. All were fabulous. The service was spot on. Attentive but not overbearing. All the courses were brought out together at the right temperture. The place gives off a great vibe. The bar area was buzzing and the open kitchen is a nice touch. We live close and will definitely be back on a frequent basis.
