An extra dollar for hot sauce?

I was so happy when Souen reopened after their water main incident. Their Planet Plate (or Macro Plate) is great. BUT, I do find it really annoying that they now charge you an extra dollar for hot sauce on the side. I'm fine with paying for the extra dressings they make in-house, but a dollar for a squirt of packaged hot sauce? (I asked, it is packaged.) That is just silly.

    Only ok

The waitstaff was quick to bring the tea and food, but sometimes difficult to find for in-between requests. We did not feel it was a great value for the money (we had the vegetable curry and sushi rolls), but was a decent restaurant overall. Also, for some, the tables might be considered a little close together.

My favorite food in the city, but inconsistent service.

I love the food at this Souen. Whenever I want a meal that is healthy, nourishing, and satisfying at a fairly reasonable price, this is where I go. But often the service is really bad. For example, last night I called to make a reservation in the early evening, and was told I would have to have made a reservation the day before. The guy I spoke to was rude on the phone, but said if I came in there would likely be a table, but "no guarantees". So, I went to the restaurant within the hour, only to find a common sight at this restaurant - a group of people standing outside waiting for tables, with at least three empty tables inside that had not yet been wiped down and set. I walked up to the host (who I believe was the same guy I spoke to one the phone) and he told me the wait would be 30 minutes. Now, in a situation like this, he could have said to me, "Listen, it's going to be 30 minutes, but if you'd like to have a seat we'll get you seated as soon as possible" and made me feel welcome. Instead, he had a weird attitude and said, "It's gonna be 30 minutes. So... " and shrugged as if to imply that I probably wouldn't want to wait and that he didn't particularly want any more business at 8 PM. I don't really understand what is going at this restaurant, but for such a relatively small space the wait staff here manage to seem truly inefficient and make tables feel unattended to. They'll stand around at the counter where you can see them, apparently doing nothing, while you have an empty water glass and people are waiting outside for empty tables. That said, there are a few waitresses there who are really good, and try to make up for the otherwise poor service. I just wish my dining experience consistently matched my enjoyment of the delicious food!

    When you need your veggies

Souen is the place to get great simple veggies. I love the squash, garlic greens and brown rice. The tahini dressing is the topper.

excellent food not just for vegans

This new Souen outpost is excellent and far exceeds the other two locations. I've brought many people here, none of whom are vegan or even vegetarians, but they've all raved about the food. Standout dishes are the seitan dumplings, yuba, the edamame "guacamole" (which is more like a hummus), and the miso ramen (stick with the house noodles). The steamed vegetables are seasonal and very simply prepared. This place is for the true lovers of vegetables, but the substantive food will also please meat eaters. Highly recommended for THIS particular Souen location.

    Tasty macrobiotic food!

I've been going to Souen for more than a decade and their standard has remained excellent. They do not believe that to observe a macrobiotic lifestyle means feeling deprived. On the contrary, their food is always tasty and filling. Their menu is not known for its creativity, and you can close your eyes and order from the same page every time. They try to vary their specials, but that can be predictable too. However, their cuisine is always flavorful and the staff, helpful. I always feel welcome and satisfied when I go there alone or with friends and family.
