    Tasty macrobiotic food!

I've been going to Souen for more than a decade and their standard has remained excellent. They do not believe that to observe a macrobiotic lifestyle means feeling deprived. On the contrary, their food is always tasty and filling. Their menu is not known for its creativity, and you can close your eyes and order from the same page every time. They try to vary their specials, but that can be predictable too. However, their cuisine is always flavorful and the staff, helpful. I always feel welcome and satisfied when I go there alone or with friends and family.

Much better then the others ...

Very tasty (maybe a bit earthy for some) - healthy, light and satisfying meals. We are always quite happy - and no matter how much we eat, never leave feeling heavy.

High quality and a reasonable price

Very fresh food that makes a body feel good! I have had the Summer Ramen, Miso Ramen, brussel sprouts, pad thai noodles and my favorite is the macroplate. I love the beautiful plants growing and flower bouquets. Very high quality at a reasonable price.

    MMMMMMMM!

I was in here the first week they opened. First of all, I hate any restaurant that doesn't take credit card (what are you thinking?) but I needed a vegan ramen fix in my neighborhood STAT, so I trekked to the ATM and wandered over. To my delight, the place was beautiful, the server was attentive and helpful, and the ramen was to die for. Perfect flavor and texture, and left me craving it constantly afterward. The reviewer below was right- it's not heavy or over-oily, and the noodles are light and clean tasting. I like this over traditional ramen anyday.

Souen Ramen is good if you don't expect fatty ramen.

My favorite Japanese macrobiotic restaurants, Souen and Souen Soho opened a new organic ramen shop last week. Of course we were intrigued by this healthy ramen option. We started off with one of my favorite Japanese appetizers, goma (sesame) tofu. As we enjoyed its perfectly sticky, smooth texture and nutty flavors, their friendly waitstaff brought our miso and shoyu ramen almost immediately. Being macrobiotic, there is no pork based broth or pork belly here à la Ippudo. You can actually choose your broth from organic chicken or vegan/vegetarian, and you can choose either whole wheat or rice noodles. The broth was very light, and the whole wheat ramen reminded me of soba or udon soup. The texture of noodle was perfectly al dente, and they did a fantastic job disguising the grainy wheat texture that is typical of macrobiotic noodles. If you expect fatty, stick to your ribs kind of ramen, you may be disappointed. But if you appreciate macrobiotic food with light and refreshing flavors, or if you are vegan or health conscious, you will enjoy the selections of Souen Ramen.
