Not great
I'm from south florida and we have some bomb Cuban places down there- this stuff is not the same. It's pretty tasty though if you're craving some Cuban flavor.

Ummm
The closest i've been to Cuba is Miami; HOWEVER, I've had some great Cuban food during my 24 years on earth and Sophies is definitely not at the top of my list. I had the pernil with rice and tostones... the pork was good.. could've been seasoned a bit more.. same for the rice and the tostones were mushy.. maybe it was a bad day for them. Today I gave their Cubano sandwich a shot and once again, the pork could've had more flavor and the sandwich as a whole was kind of dry. The one thing that i know without a doubt that is spectacular are their beef empanadas. They were one of the best i've ever had. In my opinion, this place is overpriced and a little overrated.

Home Cooked CUBAN FOOD!... NOT
This place is good for those who have never made it past 59th Street. If you've ever been to El Malecon or La Caridad and gotten a full plate for half the price you will be sorely disappointed. But, if you are really really desperate for Cuban/PR/Dominican food, and can afford a $10 lunch go for it. PS: service is horrible the other reviews didn't lie.

subpar
Terrible chicken -- dried out, overcooked, underseasoned. And they've never gotten my order right. Don't bother ordering anything without mayo, it's going to have mayo on it no matter what.

Good homestyle Latin food but you are going to pay a location premium
I just started working in the area and I've been trying out all the main lunch spots. There is good variety in this area but as far as Latin food goes I don't think anyone nearby is really competing with Sophies in terms of food quality. The food was very tasty and tasted home-made. For 9 bucks you get a meal which consists of one meat dish with two sides. The only thing is this same meal would cost you about 2 or 3 dollars less uptown. They give a lot of food but so do most decent places uptown. You are basically paying a $2-3 location premium. Now I don't know about you guys but personally I don't have the luxury of paying 9 dollars for lunch (without a drink!) all the time. But whenever I get the hankering for some Latin food that is not made by my wife or my mom I guess I'll plop down the 9 bucks. This place is crowded and busy during lunch time. Loud. Not a plesant sit-down place during peak hours. Unless your going after peak time I would suggest you take your food to go. Service wasn't decent enough and as always when you go to a Latin place it helps to know some Spanish.

Not like it used to be.
I used to go to the original Sophie's on Greenwich Street near the WTC circa 1998-2001. Back then the food was great the value was great. But after they started opening multiple restaurants it was all down hill. Notice the older reviews from 2004 and earlier. There is no debate it was great. 2010 different story.

Tasty!
Ran over in a rainstorm at 12:30, no long (thankfully). Chose beef stew w/ rice and beans and it was delicious. Hands down best take out meal in weeks. Thanks Sophie's!
