    Dissatisfied

The uninspired food comes at this restaurant comes at high prices, delivered by inattentive servers who are not customer-oriented. The restaurant was virtually empty when we dined there, yet the service was extremely slow. All courses were disappointing in flavor and lacked visual appeal. I will not return because I felt like a tourist who made a bad choice.

    Yuck

I decided to try a new place. I love Mexican food. The place was empty on a nice sunny day. I found that odd. I ordered steak quesadillas. OMG the cheese was not fully melted, the quesadillas were not fully cooked, the steak was like roast beef and uncooked. It was horrible. Not mexican at all. The chips and salsa are fine. The waitress was nice and attentive but I arrived before another table and she atended to them first. I was so dissatisfied. I don't think I ever hated a restaurant this much. I don't know how this place is still in business. The only thing they didn't screw up was the wine. But you can't go wrong there it's from the bottle. That's like screwing up Corona.

    Not recommended

Unpleasant waitstaff, and gratuity added to the bill with no notice make this place avoidable. The lackluster fare cannot possibly be worth dealing with the servers.

    Good Food, Good Value

We stopped in for an early dinner after a matinee (the restaurant we had planned on wasn't open yet for dinner). Found the service to be attentative and very friendly, the 3-course at $19.95to $22.95 was a good deal especially in the area. (they did not charge for the chips and salsa as a another reviewer said they did) Had the black bean soup, grilled the steak fillets on a sizzling skillet, flan and it was very good. Drinks were typically Manhattan prices. Dinner for two with drinks, desserts and tip was $85, not bad for after a play.

    Wait Staff Is Not Good

We come here once in a while for dinner and we're amazed every time at the poor service. At our last visit, we were seated promptly only to wait 15 minutes to get greeted and order our drinks. We had to wait another 10 to order dinner. The wait staff, all 5 of them, were all gathered around waiting and chatting. They seemed totally unaware of their duties. Noone came to check whether food was ok after it arrived. Busboys were prompt and attentive, but the waitresses should get a refresher training class.

    Boring and bland

I have been walking by this restaurant for months on my way home from work and my husband and I decided to give it a try last night. From the outside it looks like a real deal mexican place and I was excited to try it since we have had a hard time finding really good mexican food in our neighborhood. We were thoroughly disappointed. It is overpriced. The food is underseasoned and boring, boring boring. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks this food is 'authentic'. The salsa was delicious, if somewhat mild, but everything else was bland and boring. I actually wondered if my burrito had been pre-made and frozen because it was so bland and watery. The service was equally unimpressive. After waiting for our 30 dollar pitcher of margaritas for almost 30 minutes we decided to skip them and find a cheaper, probably better, drink elsewhere. It just seemed like this place was a 'safe' version of mexican food, which is not what we wanted. So the search for that perfect mexican continues for us...

    Old School Hell's Kitchen-esque Treasure

Remeber the golld ol'days? Prefer restaurants where you order 5 of the same drinks and 2 of them are in different looking glasses. Prefer a spot where the bar is tiny and in the way of the door? Prefer a spot where the decorations in mid-June include a mini Xmas tree with changing fiber optic lights clearly in the middle of a tiny floor space. Prefer someplace where you and your friends can gather in, enjoy the 2-for-1 Margaritas all night and forget about everything. I do, if you do as well then this a place for you. Sure the food is not perfect and the one taco is sitting on top of a pile of sour cream thus making it soggy. I ask you, have you ever eaten at a local restaurant in Mexico? This is what it looks like. Typical Mexican food isn't upscale. If you want that, go to Rosa Mexicano or Dos Camino's. If you want a well-priced (very inexpensive in my mind) spot to grab some good food then here you go. Don't believe me? Waste a Thursday evening and go there and try the Steak Ranchero or the Tacos Carbon. Maybe not the best in the world but sure as all hell good. I'm glad I found this spot and will come back a thousand times over. BTW, I gave it a 4.5 for atmosphere because every time I've gone there with friends we've nearly helped turn the chairs up at the end of the night. It's a gem of place with love/hate type of atmosphere. If you've ever been to Belmont Tavern in Newark and wondered what place would be like had Mexican's d it... Here it is. Sombrero's is very much an experience as much as it is a restaurant. AMAZING!
