First time at this neighborhood restaurant. We couldn't have been more pleased. We ordered a variety of tapas which were all good,. The grilled calamari in garlic sauce was particularly good. Our waiter was knowledgeable and his suggestions were right on. We'll be back.

We eat out a lot.... I can actually say we have been to most great restaurants in the New York city area... I am very particular about the freshness of food and in my recent experience with Sol and Sombra was really not that good! Man Paella was really bad...the squid tasted more like a old rubber than fish... Yup they need a huge improvement in their kitchen... I would never eat there again.... Best Paellas go to: Blue Ribbon downtown...very good or El Quijote...also downtown...

Short staffed. Servers were not respectful. Place was disorganized. Orders are forgotten. Meals are brought to wrong tables. 45 minutes after we sat, we finally- after complaining multiple times- received our coffee. Then.. our bloody marys were brought over another 10 minutes later... Bloody marys were watery and tasted like plain tomato juice. Servers did not care about anything and would at times completely ignore customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

On my first trip, I found all the tapas I tried to be excellent. The owner recommended the calamari in garlic sauce. If I eat them at all, I usually have them fried, but these were fantastic! On susbsequent visits, both the waitstaff and the owner remembered us and were very attentive. I've never had a bad meal there! A selection of hot and cold tapas give you nice variety and are all really tasty! As someone else said, snobs should stay home, tho.

After several visits to Sol y Sombra with three to four companions, I can recommend this restaurant without reservation. I especially wish to highlight the Tapas. They are varied, delicious, nutritious, AND quite substantial. Indeed, I have never ordered a regular entree at Sol y Sombra. Each time, our group has ordered a variety of tapas, salads to share, and red wine, and we've been rewarded with a fulfilling and nourishing meal. The courtesy appetizers served are exciting and prepare you for the flavor feast to follow. Do explore the offerings. You will be gratified whatever your selection. Service is friendly, professional, and relaxed, and though I'm not big on desserts, I have sampled a few from among my friends' choices. They too are simply delicious. I just ate there tonight and I will definitely be back very soon! I had the shrimp in garlic sauce and my friend had the arroz con pollo(chicken and rice). We started with an artichoke heart appetizer and a white asparagus appetizer. Two friends of mine ate there last night and thought the food was so good that they recommended it to us. The food was fresh and delicious and the service was phenomenal. They even said good night at the door when leaving.

This visit wasn't my first here, and I don't remember it being this poor last time. Did it take some kind of a very sharp down turn? Service was very pushy (no need to keep asking us if we're not selecting from today's special), but that wasn't even the main issue. The seafood in the Paella Marinera was clearly very old. Before the waiter even set it down on the table, I was hit with the fishy, passing-by-China Town-fish-monger-in-summer odor. I managed to put some in my mouth, and they had the distinctive freezer smell. So did the peas. And what kind of paella has so much liquid the bottom was completely covered in soup? It's supposed to be crisp on the bottom! The whole thing tasted so stale, I felt like even the rice tasted like cardboard. Argh. I left more than half of my dish, and the bus boy was stunned when I didn't want the rest to go. I was already feeling sick in my stomach by then. I do love good food and can be picky, but I haven't had such food in a very long time. I will never go back - and we live in the neighborhood! So glad we went with a coupon... Otherwise I would have definitely complained to the manager. Now I have to go back to Socarrat to erase this memory of disappointing paella.
