    great food, won't go back

We have been to Sofrito several times. I really enjoy the food, and the prices are quite reasonable for Manhattan. BUT-you can't hear yourself think! The restaurant was sooooo noisy that it was painful. Our table (4 people) was in the center, but other tables were not that close to us-yet we had to yell to attempt to talk to each other. The noise level is unacceptable. There is a difference between loud and painfully loud. This was just too much. In addition, there were no fewer than 7 birthdays in the time we were there-and each one is acknowledged with loud singing. Overall, great food, a bad experience. I know that the noise is a cultural "thing" but there is a point of rediculous. The sound needs to be toned down so it is a pleasant experience too. The food is really good-I've enjoyed it each time I've been there. Portions are big, prices are fair, and service was good. (it can be spotty)-but I will think long and hard before returning-and certainly before recommending and bringing friends.

    give it a chance

In order to fully enjoy Sofrito you would have to go at least twice: once for the atmosphere and drinks and once for the food. I originally went on a Saturday with two other people and loved the lively crowd and loud music. We were told that the wait for a party of three would be 1.5-2 hrs, which i thought was a bit much but with a few drinks i was sure i'd forget all about it. Unfortunately the wait was extended to 3 hrs and no amount of drinks could make me feel better about having to wait that long for food. (By the by, the drinks were great, I really recommend the Sofrito Mojito.) Anyway, I decided to give this place a second chance because of the great reviews it received for its food. This time we went on a Monday and were seated right away. The ambiance, of course, was much different but I didn't mind it because I was really just there to try the food. This I must say did not disapoint. We ordered the sancocho to see if it was as good as my grandmother's (it was not, but then again not much is). It was tasty and came in a large pot which meant that we were a bit full by the time the entrees arrived. I ordered the pork shoulder (pernil) thinking that i would get some nice chunks of the tender meat but instead found that they pretty much just serve the whole damn shoulder (no complaints since it meant that i didn't have to buy lunch or dinner the next day). It was very flavorful and my sister said the chicharron (crispy skin) was the best she'd tasted. For dessert we shared a tres leches. The slice was huge and we were sure we wouldn't be able to finish it but it was so good we couldn't stop eating it. People say it's pricey for the type of food it is but it was worth the value. We paid $68 for three people (one appetizer, three entrees, two desserts) and left looking three months pregnant and exclaiming, "We'll never eat again!"

    Great food, good time.

As a first timer at this place, I was a little hesitant from some of the negative reviews I've read regarding waiting to get a table. A friend and I went there on a Friday night without a reservation as they told us parties of less than 4 could not make a reservation on a Friday or any other weekend night. So we showed up expecting to be waiting a ridiculous amount of time but were pleasantly surprised. The hostess was friendly and we were seated before we had even received our first drink from the bar. The food is absolutely delicious and the portions are huge. The prices are a little high for this type of food but we were not only paying for the food but the service and I guess ambiance. This place's only drawback is the noise as others have complained. If you are going with a big group this might not be a problem to you, but if you are going with one other person looking for an intimate setting, this is not the right place. I had to strain my voice the whole night so that the other person could hear me. And the constant birthday singing at the tables was a tad annoying. However, the service was good, food delicious and I would return to this place but most likely with a few more people.

    Da Bomb

This place is great. The food is excellent, people are sexy and friendly. I've been there over a dozen times and it keeps getting better. The people that complained don't know anything about dining out. You cant go wrong here, trust me!! BTW Ask for JR tell them the Godfather sent you then smack him on his cheek.

    Underwhelmed

Great if you like stuffy, overly crowded, noisy spots with pedestrian food and indifferent service. We were elated to get out of there.

Probably go back to Sofrito but...

Place feels good, has great energy and food is excellent!! I have been there three times now and would probably go back but need to mention 2 things. It is a very loud place. The lounge area can be loud but the dinner area needs to be toned down just a bit. You can hardly converse without shouting - it takes a lot of energy and does take away from the dinning experience. The birthday celebration moments - way too many and THE SINGING AND CELEBRATION IS LOUD. Why do we have to be subjected to that? It is a great gesture and makes the bday person feel good - but you are discounting other patrons. Do celebrate but do not make a production out of it.( it gets too loud) The hostess told us 45 min to be seated and so we grabbed drinks at the bar and 1hr went by. When we went to inquire, we were told will seat you shortly. Hostess came to seat get us 2hrs later!! We refused the table and got a quick bite at the lounge and left. My point, if tables are taking longer than what was promised, at least come and communicate with us so we can do what we need to do. Regardless of how well the place is doing, it is very important to validate and appreciate everyone that comes through your doors. Above and beyond the success of your restaurant, it is touches like this that leave a huge impression. Other than that – your place rocks and wish you continuous success….. .

    Disappointed

We went to celebrate my friends birthday today. I have been there a few times and the food is great. Although today had been a disappointment overall. I called to make the reservations a while back for a party of 15. Tried to call to confirm a couple a days in a row and no one called me back. Finally go thru to confirm. Still the day of , they called me to make sure we were going because they had overbooked. The reservations were for 10:15. Four of us including the birthday person got there around 9:00 and we told everyone else to make sure they got there around 9:30 so that we would not lose our reservations. We were not seated till well after 11:00. The whole time we were there the air conditioning was not working. One of the women's bathroom stall did not work properly. They only have two. We finally sat down and placed our order. They came back to tell us that they no longer had the pernil (roast pork). Maybe if they sat us at the reserved time we would have had the roast pork. Then for dessert a few of us asked for coffee. The dessert came out and we are waiting for the coffee and waiting till we finally ask a waiter and he went to the back only to come back to tell us that the coffee machine was broken. No one bothered to inform us before hand. Their food is really great, although I did not have any today because what I wanted they no longer had (the pernil). But their service today was poor. I have been cured from Sofrito for a long time. I could have my mother cook for me or cook it myself before I go back there any time soon.
