    Closed

It's a shame this place closed. They had problems (like taking 2-3 hours to deliver food a few blocks, cutting out breakfast, strange hours and then the final nail in their coffin -- the renovation), but overall, the food was fresh, clean, reasonably priced and good. I miss the pleasant staff, the comfort and casual pre-renovation atmosphere and the good food. They had a good thing going, but seemingly refused to market it and then they went and changed it. Then they died. RIP.

    Below average

The turkey meatballs were hard. They tasted like they were frozen and taken straight to the skillet. The other food was just okay. This place doesn't offer anything you can't make at home.

    Thank goodness this place exists!

I have walked past this place so many times but just the other day I finally had time to stop in and grab a bite. The warm, country-style atmosphere and friendly staff make their presence known immediately. It is not a full-service restaurant, you pick out your food that is packaged in a case and the staff will heat it or plate it for you. Especially easy if you need to grab food to go. But I spent a couple hours reading and eating that afternoon and the most spectacular items i had were the Veggie Curry with brown rice, soy latte and for dessert, mint ice cream cookie sandwich and a glass of cabernet. The food is more pricey than you'd pay at other cafe's but they use mostly organic ingredients and everything is made in house. If you have the extra bucks, why not support sustainable agriculture and organic farming?

not as good as it sounds

Just moved to the neighborhood and thought we'd try simple kitchen. We ordered the veggie lasagna special for $11.00, (the portion was small and the side salad had no dressing and had not been washed) the lassi of the day (which was child sized) and a vegan peanut butter cookie (which came completely burnt, black like the street.) When I called the simple kitchen to tell them our dismay the girl on the phone said, "welcome to the neighborhood maybe it will be better next time!". Thankfully there are so many other fabulous restaurants in chelsea to support. Simple Kitchen clearly doesn't seem to care about the quality of food or service.

    Simply overated!

My two friends & I went to Simple Kitchen after hearing "great" things about the place. First of all, upon entry, you're faced with a large wooden communal farm table & two small tables nearby. Across the other side of the room is a wooden plank & some stools...I guess for those having a quick bite. It's a charming space. After sitting down, the woman behind the counter said, "I'll be right there." She came with menus & water. With a sweet smile, she tells us that we can take whatever's in the refrigerators & she can heat it up & plate it for us. What we found neatly stacked in the fridge were the "same-ole, same ole" crap you'd find in similar trendy eateries: a variety of salads & soups, rice & pastas, grains & veggies, (refrigerated) grilled cheese sandwiches on fancy breads, organic drinks, etc. So, we wound up standing around the refrigerators looking at food that seemed to have been sitting there all day. We finally decided on a little of this & that. We handed the food over the counter & sat down. A few minutes later, the woman brought our "heated" food to the table. Although the food seemed to be made with fresh ingredients, there was nothing spectacular about it. In fact, everything seemed a bit under-seasoned. The three of us looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders. What was shocking was when the bill arrived. With a decent tip, the bill was over $50 Bucks!!! And, for what? I figured that we were paying an average of $5 or more per item (as compared with similar eateries) just to have the woman heat up (a sandwich, a plate of noodles, some rice & a bowl of soup) and transfer them onto pretty plates/bowls!!! That's SIMPLY OUTRAGEOUS! We won't be back!

    This place is home

Oh, man. When I'm having a bad day, this is where I go for some love in the form of food. Everything from the decor to the service to the food makes you feel great. Give this place a shot and it will become your neighborhood favorite!
