If Bukowski Were a Short-Order Cook, He Wouldn't Treat Customers This Way
Been here twice. No more. The food is very good and different, in a mad-scientist sort of way. But even Kobe beef served atop a naked Penelope Cruz, followed by a selection of French farmhouse cheeses arrayed across Anne Hathaway, couldn't make up for the way I've seen customers treated. Don't believe any of the press hype the Shopsin family has gotten. They're all a bunch of soulless miscreants who believe that their restaurant is a stage on which they can take out, on the general public, their many frustrations. Some day, ol' Kenny will say the wrong thing to the wrong diner. So it goes.

An absolute nightmare
I went here for the first time today and was absolutely horrified! I saw the owner turn away two customers (when the place was near empty) because they were asking too many questions. When they left they were called cunts out loud for everyone else to hear. Next customer sits down, orders, gets served food, then when the owner decided he didn't like her he took her plate away. Was resulted was a screaming match and her walking away in a fit. The food was decent, nothing special not worth the drama. See for yourself if you don't believe me.

If Bukowski was a short order chef...
Tiny, chaotic, and ALWAYS jammed--we went on a Tuesday morning and still had to wait a good 15 minutes. The food wasn't mind blowing but it WAS very good, and besides, you go here as much for the experience as for the food. Prices are a little high but pretty reasonable for Manhattan. I would definitely go back, but be prepared to wait a while and have a backup plan if they're not open (or just don't like your looks).

Waste of waiting time
I've heard great things about Shopins and decided to go. After seeing the long line we were told we could not get food to go. We waited 1 1/2 hours. Asked for menus while we waited and were pointed to one on the wall next to a table. SUGGESTION: Hand out menus to the line to save time reading the very long menu. Food was very good but not worth the wait. Will not go back. The seating process was odd and seemed to have no rhyme or reason.

Definitely and Experience
We made it there in the nick of time as the wait was long and they close at 3pm. Definitely a crusty father and son but true NYC characters and the food was good. The whole market is interesting and I had never been before. We both chose items w/poached eggs which were quite good.

the best pancakes ever!!
My god - the best brunch! their pancakes - which took me forever to decide on a flavor because of the millions of choices - were the best I've had and so much cheaper than my usual chelsea haunts. If only I live on the LES and I would be there every Sat! Best if there are only 2 of you as you can't make reservations and there are only 10 tables (they won't seat groups larger than 4)

small, yes, but awesome
i love shopsins!! I loved old shopsins. I love new shopsins. the food is still just as good as before, the service is still as quirky but well-meaning as before, just the space is smaller. Still, you can get the food to go and then enjoy it outside in a park or some other nice place if you don't want to be cramped.
