Worth trying!
It is a japanese owned restaurant, so you know what to expect. The restaurant was clean, food was great and the service was very attentive. A cute place with fresh delicious fish. I will go again! The spicy tuna was so yummy!

Delicious/fresh sushi for a good price
Shimizu is one of my favorite neighborhood sushi places. It's best when you sit at the sushi counter and order either omakase or a la carte. It's not cheap but worth it and is the best value deal. If you order just generic sushi deluxe or other set menus at a table, it's good but nothing spectucular. you can always trust that you will get good quality and fresh sushi though. i've been going for years now. Not the best atmosphere though, just looks like a neighborhood sushi joint.

Unwise and Untrained
The food itself is decent (but not good) so 3 out of 5. What is wrong with this place is the wait staff. First, I had to tell the waitress to get me a clean saucer as the one she gave me had a very very visible stain (not sure how/why that would be missed). She complied but did not apologize. Then, after the meal was over and I was about to leave, she came over and said the 12% tip was too small. She said people usually give 18%. Maybe if this were dinner or if there were more people but I was there for a quick lunch by myself. I am amazed by the lack of training of both the wait staff (ie, make sure you actually earn the tip by giving good service by spotting things like a dirty saucer) and the audacity of the wait staff to demand 18% tip. Pretty inexcusable. Not recommended.

Nearly perfect
This place is a gem. Fish is fresh and tempura is non-greasy. Only drawback is the price.

Restraunt week
This week is a Japanese Restaurant Week, so I ordered the 'Restaurant Week Special Pre Fixed DInner Set'. The sushi plate was fantastic! Fatty-tuna, sea urchin, and especially roasted-shrimp were surprisingly great tasted! And the dessert ice-cream was also fantastic. Although It was just a bit disappointing that I had to wait for a while due to the short of hands, except that , it was almost perfect!

Not for sushi
I really wanted to like this restaurant as it is convenient to my work. The miso soup was above average, quite enjoyable, the tempura was also above average and also enjoyable. The problem was the sushi and the freshness and quality of the fish. My wife and I found it sub standard. We were in a charitable mood too. My wife actually had to spit a piece of fish into her napkin because she found it unedible. Avoid the sushi here.

Our Favorite Place
My dear old dad used to take me to Shimizu. Now that I'm married, my husband and I make a monthly outing. Unlike a lot of other sushi places in the city, there's no attempt to Americanize the food. As a lover of spicy tuna, I was glad to find one that wasn't glued together with mayonnaise. It's the best sushi we've found in New York, and it's cheaper and less crowded than Sushi Zen.
