Shelsky's Of Brooklyn

This is the real deal. Outstanding fish, classic appetizing an exciting new ideas (the bluefish salad with orange fennel and hazelnuts... HellOOOO, Gorgeous!). The folks in there are so cool and so nice. I'm easily in there once a week. Do yourself a favor and get your tushie over there. (The Gatsby is by far my fave sandwich)

Shelsky's in theory could be a good addition to the neighborhood, as it would be great to not have to go to fairway to get my weekly smoked salmon. But... The first time I went, I came home and half of my sliced salmon was brown and there was hard parts on it. The next few times I asked if they could trim (like at Fairway) and yet every time, I come home and there is brown, fishy edges (even though they cut a little out) and I have to spend my time cleaning it up. I also find that if I ask for half a pound, I get closer to 3/4, or 1/4, I get a third. Going to Fairway is worth the trip- where you get consistently pristine, professionally sliced salmon. Ps. Always get a receipt because 2 times I was overcharged!

The food is good. So glad to have a smoked fish shop this good in Carroll Gardens.

Great variety of high-quality smoked fish and other traditional Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine. The bagels are delicious, but not baked in-house, so on Saturdays they have been frozen from the day before. They slice fish to-order which is classy, but painstaking, so if you're looking for a quick in-and-out bagel you'll be disappointed. If you're new to appetizing (the dairy flip-side of delicatessen), they are very happy to guide.
