Pretty good
It was a pretty good experience for me. The food was very nice, and the price was reasonable. The service was decent, too.

Poor first impression
I went there for the first time and had a disappointing experience. We waited for a really long time for our food come and the service wasn't too nice. The food that eventually came was good though. When the bill came, I gave little less than 15% because I felt the service wasn't up to it, but the waiter actually came up and demanded a 15-20% tip! I was quite shocked and upset by his actions. There isn't a law for how much I tip and I do tip quite generously for good service, but not bad ones.

would not go anywhere else in manhattan
I have been coming to this restaurant for 10 years. I do not know who wrote these negative reviews, but you have to be kidding me. I have brought the CEO and General Counsel of two Fortune 100 companies here, saying it was an "unknown place that REAL new yorkers go to." They thought it was amazing. The food is delicious, the avocado is always superb, and the tuna is top quality. (Get the village jumbo sushi). The people watching cannot be beat. Yes, the service can sometimes be wanting, but it's not nobu. But the sushi quality is simply fantastic -- especially considering the price. The place is INEXPENSIVE. (not cheap). High quality at a ridiculous price. Dinner for 6 people - everyone was stuffed and thought it was the greatest meal ever, came to 180 - including alcohol. And the hipster from Brooklyn took enough food home with him to last him two days worth of dinners. This is my go-to restaurant, period. Have been going here for a decade, and never going to stop. I have never submitted a review on a site like this before, but seeing the crappy reviews raised my ire. Do not screw with my sharaku!

Nice :)
The food was good and portions generous -- a combination that doesn't happen very often in Japanese restaurants.

Great food
Ended up here with friends one day and loved all the food I tried, the Nabeyaki Udon dish and a bunch of sushi. Everything was delicious. Would love to go back again.

Wonderful Nabeyaki Udon
My wife and I have gone several times and have always been pleased with the delicious food and friendly service. The Nabeyaki Udon and Beef Yakiniku are especially great. There are so many places in NY that sometimes a nice place gets lost in the shuffle. This is a really good value restaurant.

my favorite!
i love this place. ive been coming here for years. It is my go to place when i want some tasty food that leaves me feeling good inside afterwards. Im a huge fan of the miso black cod and the beef sukiyaki (its just down right AMAZING)! and let me also point out the friendly and attentive waitstaff. The miso soup is "meh" and the green tea is sometimes a little weak but really everything else hits the spot!
