Soup dumplings worth the wait
This has been my go-to restaurant for Xmas dinner 2 out of the last 3 years. The soup dumplings are a real treat and the other dishes good as well. There's usually a line outside, and it's a crowded restaurant, but while you wait you can stop by the out-of-this-world jerky shop next door.

Good vibes
My husband and I first went to Shanghai Cuisine for our 4th year anniversary. We were amazed at how good the food was. We also enjoyed the park across the street.

Clean place, great food.
Yes, the service is not good, but just ignore it. The food is excellent and it's one of the cleanest, openest restaurants in Chinatown which is refreshing. Soup dumplings are awesome as are the small dumplings in broth and just about everything on the menu. In nice weather the front of the dining room is open to the street. Go early for lunch on a weekday and you can sit virtually alone in the place rather than a busy/crowded day/time.

meh
my friend really wanted soup dumplings, i didn't want to wait to be seated. . . here we were. the food was certainly enjoyable but at the same level as a good delivery at 2 to 3 x the price. we were seated at another group's table even thought there were other small tables open. i asked the waiter a question about whether a dish came with rice noodles or wheat noodles and it started a veritable tail-spin. plus it was Chintatown the saturday before Christmas and the tourists were thick, so be forewarned, this book must be written up in a lot of guides for a "real NY experience". but my friend was very happy with her soup dumplings. ok, but if you are in Chinatown, you can do better.

Consistently Good
My family and I have been dining here for ten years. We've never had a bad meal and we've never had bad service. The food has always been fresh, which distinguishes their vegetable dishes from others. The soup dumplings are marvelous. It is not Euro Haute Cuisine. However, the service is quick and the staff has often recommended dishes that have always proven delicious.

Authentic (at least more so than most)
I agree that the crab and pork soup dumplings are worth going for alone (or any of the soup dumplings). Some of their other dishes are great also, especially the more traditional authentic Shanghai dishes. The service is certainly not great, but not much worse than the average Chinatown place.

Great Soup Dumplings
These are some of the best soup dumplings on the block! I especially like the crab and pork ones. They also make a fabulous crispy whole fish, unexpectedly in a flavorful meat sauce! The cold chicken in wine sauce and sea cucumbers are well done, and all of the vegetable dishes are solid. We've tried their special "osmanthus pork" which is similar to the pork nuggets you get with sweet and sour pork. I thought they were too fatty, although my husband liked them. Sure the service is brusque, but it is on par with what you expect from a chinatown restaurant. They offer so many delicious and specialty items, why would you ask for something that isn't on the menu? anyway?
