    Not worth it!

Even though I got a groupon for my meal. The food was not worth the price. We waited 30 mins for our meal. I took 3 bites from my dish and didnt even feel like having anymore. The food lacked taste and was nothing special to try.

    Great Food - Subpar Service

I have to agree with the reviews that complained about the service. I went with 3 friends this past weekend, and the waitress didn't even take our order until almost an hour after we were seated (it took her a solid 30 minutes to get drinks to the table). The food was original and very tasty, but after all was said and done, our meal was three and a half hours long! Susur Lee is a talented chef, but he better get some effective floor management in his restaurant asap, or the horrifying service is going to take this place down.

    Shang was great!

I was excited to eat at the Top Chefs, Susur Lee's restaurant. I read the reviews and was a little worried that it might be awful. BUT it wasn't!! It was great! The food was excellent. We had tuna tataki for a starter which was excellent. The lettuce wraps with chicken were so tasty! I highly recommend them. I also had the hot and sour soup which was perfect!! Exactly the way I fantasize about it tasting. It was peppery and vinegary in just the right amounts. YUM. I had the Empress chicken for an entree. The chicken says it is shredded. It isn't really shredded it looks more like it had been chopped. The flavor was excellent. My husband had the shrimp and scallops ( I don't eat these) and loved them. He said they were really terrific! Our service was superb. I was so happy about that. So many times I go to eat at fairly expensive restaurants only to have bad service. It really ruins the whole meal and makes me mad to spend money on being "abused". Thank-you Shang for making our meal worth it! My tea was hot and our water glasses were constantly full. I see one reviewer who had a bad time during restaurant week- I need to say that I never go to restaurant during restaurant week. I did it ONE time and never got my food.- Don't expect anything good during restaurant week!!

    Excellent Food, Terrible Service

We went during restaurant week but chose to order from the regular menu. This should have been a good thing as our bill was quite high. However my dates food arrived 40 minutes before they brought me the wrong order. The waiter then acted as though I was mistaken which I was not because I am a vegetarian and they brought a dish with meat. Twenty minutes later (an hour after my dates food had come) I asked them to simply cancel my order and bring our bill. Finally this inspired the manager to bring my food and tell us dinner would be on the house. All this was bad enough but the entire time they never came back to see if we would like to place a second drink order or if we wanted dessert. I loved the dinner I finally got and the first course was delicious but I will never go back.

    Don't believe the nay-sayers...great place.

I'll admit we only discovered Shang after watching Chef Susur Lee Top Chef Masters last season. I read a lot of the bad or lukewarm reviews and walked in skeptical. I was very pleasantly surprised. Soon as we sat down, our waiter told us Chef Lee was working that night and recommended a new dish, "Top Chef Chicken Curry." I went with that and it was grand -- chicken curry with polenta, pineapple and tomato jam that all worked wonderfully together. My wife had salmon with wasabi mashed potato and a yuzu dressing over the fish that she was equally pleased with. We both shared the Singapore Slaw for a starter, which is a signature dish and quite possibly the standout of a great meal. For dessert, we had a special that night, ginger creme brulee, also very good. After the meal, our waiter let us sneak back into the kitchen to meet Chef Lee. All in all, a great experience. Check it out.

    Our waiter literally disappeared ...

The service was the worst I think I have ever seen!!!! Everything was sooooo slow and our waiter literally did not show up for the latter half of the meal!! I was in a group of 5 and I ordered a bunch of small plates and when everybody's food starting coming I realized I wanted to order one more dish. I asked the bus boy to send the waiter 3 times and he never ever came and the busboy would not take my order. It took over an hour to get our bill and after we got our bill a girl came over asking if we wanted dessert!! They were so confused. The food was fine but nothing exceptional at all and for NYC which has amazing restaurants this restaurant was nothing special. I will not be returning to say the least.

Which would you prefer a new tea bag or hot water?

The food was uneven. We ordered two vegatable dishes--eggplant/cauliflower & turnip/eggplant both good, first dish was better. For entres I ordered the Snapper--big disappointment, bland, very small, unmemorable. So I ordered the tofu with seafood which was abominable. My partner ordered Pork Belly which he thought was very good. The staff stands over you but doesn't do much else. My tea was ice cold. I had to ask for hot tea. The third time the tea was cold I ask the waitress for hot tea. She asked, Which would you prefer, hot water or a new tea bag." So much for brains and service at Shang. The atmosphere is of a cheap dark bar. There are just too many good restaurants in NYC to eat so, so food at this one.
