It took me a while to try out this place, mostly due to the fact that it always seems a bit uninviting (mostly cause it is empty a lot of the time - but they do have a thriving delivery business). I was overall very pleased with the food. It is not expensive and the food was delicious with excellent fresh ingredients. Some dishes had a bit more oil than I prefer, but delicious none the less. There was only one waitress, who was mostly busy the whole time with phone/delivery orders so our service was efficient, and not very friendly. But I don't really care about that. The interior is basic, yet clean and neutral. I would happily recommend this place as a casual place to get great chinese / thai food, with efficient service, reasonable prices. Oh, and they also serve wine & beer.

We had lunch here today and were very impressed. The food was simple and fresh, the portions were more than enough and it was service with a smile. So many Chinese places in town churn out MSG-rich, oily crap. This is very different. A real love for food went into the preparation. The wonton soup starter was perfect - a fragrant clear broth, some sprigs of cilantro, delectable wontons. Go there!

Finally! Great Chinese takeout, or eat-in, in Brooklyn. Since discovering this little gem, we've stopped going into our really good place in the East Village. The chef at Shanghai Lee is talented and dedicated to clean, fresh and delicious. The chile noodles are really good, the rices are all non-greasy, the vegetables and tofu entrees are fresh and the sauces are a perfect blend of savory, sweet, and spice. Service is prompt and thoughtful, with little extras, such as tea, a cute dish of peanuts, and for dessert, a carved blood orange. Any bad reviews of this restaurant are confusing it with the poor Chinese by the same name on Franklin. One try and you will suddenly be finding you're eating Chinese a whole lot more often!

I've lived in Greenpoint for eight years now, and I am kicking myself for never having tried Shang Hai Lee until today. The food is excellent. The service is incredibly friendly. They have both Chinese and Thai food. I will never order from another Chinese aside from Shang Hai Lee again.

above average for NYC, 5 stars for greenpoint/williamsburg/ and anywhere not Brooklyn Chinatown. the nice part is that, unlike most chinese takeout/delivery places, meat dishes aren't 95% vegetables and the vegetables don't taste like plastic.
