pretty great
Used to live around the corner from here and go back when I am in the hood. Really great oyster selection. More importantly the owner (or manager, whoever it is he is always there) is the maybe the nicest guy on the planet. Great recommendations! Great raw bar!

Happily surprised
I've been wanting to try this restaurant out as I just moved to the neighborhood. Well, I finally did and it was wonderful. Great oyster and beer selection and my salmon entree was prepared just right. Our server was super friendly and helpful with recommendations. I'll definitely be going back.

Winning formula!
the food is actually better than the atmosphere it is served in, that is to say, the restaurant has a New-England sort of brasserie/bar feel and then arrives this wonderful food. My family is from Rhode Island so I have had a lot of seafood, but Shaffers does it better.

Tell everyone you know about this place!
I have been here 4 times and every single time was excellent. The seared scallops with mushroom risotto are to die for, a dish worth going for in and of itslef. While it is not necessarily for the "faint of wallet", it is an excellent value considering the quality of food, and you certainly get what you pay for. And it is always a party when Shaffer himself is in the house

Oyster lovers home
Wow. Really discovered oysters this year. Always liked them and gathered them in British Columbia, but never really sought to discover their individual character. This is the place in NYC. Tonight, we had a choice of 27 varieties, ( I figured the 35 advertised was not sustainabile) at $2:00 -3:00 per oyster. Wow. These folks know their craft like Kurumazushi knows fish. Value, teriffic. Less than expected, we got the large platter. Needs less mussels, less clams, needs more oysters but this is a quibble. Service great. It is better than Balthizar for the oyster lover. Think Peter Lugar for the shell crowd, except there is far more selection than just Porterhouse for two.
