Best italian restaurant in New York

The food, the service, the ambiance, it was just an incredible experience! This restaurant is worth a detour. Try the crisp, the soft egg filled ravioli with truffles butter, the Dover sole pot the florentine steak . The whole experience is just stupendous.

    Not Worth The Money

We live in the neighborhood and have heard about this place, so we decided to try it - what a disappointment. Space is modern, clean (borderline sterile), and new. Wine bar in front was EMPTY- can't imagine that is good for business when the restaurant is tucked in the back. We waited 20 mins for ANYONE to come to the table. Sommelier spilled wine all over the table cloth and our waiter was nice when he did come to the table, but that wasn't often. Pasta with truffles was delish, venison was a pile of red mush on red mush, and the lemon semmifredo was very good too. Too bad it took another 20 mins to get the check....Perhaps if they focused more on the service and improving some of the dishes, they would have more success.

Obnoxious service, OK food (for the price)

I visited sd26 on a group buying certificate I had purchased thinking it would be a good way to try a new restaurant. The food is OK, atmosphere is chic, but the service is not good. And in my opinion, it is all about the experience...you can overlook OK food if it is a good experience. While I had misread the terms of the certificate (yes, my fault), the GM did nothing to accomodate to insure I'd be a repeat guest. In fact, he made it more difficult, which insured that I will never return. The quality of the food was good, but not for the price charged. The atmosphere is very European, very city chic. The restaurant is run much like many upscale European restaurants I've enjoyed, but they do a horrible job remembering they are in the US and need to cater to their clientele accordingly. I was at the restaurant for lunch with a Public Relations colleague who was also anxious to try something new , especially for upcoming press lunches. She was as appalled, if not more than I, at the service. I work in event planning with many food and beverage vendors and have a sense of how far a limit can be pushed by the staff to accomodate a guest and sd26 did just the opposite. That said, I'll never consider the restaurant for an event! Definitely recommend spending your time and money at another restaurant...in fact, I'd gladly spend 4x the amount at Per Se for a quality experience and food that is worth it!

Won't Go back - Major Disappointment

One of the worst dining experiences, I hae had from start to finish. Cool, modern atmosphere..but more hype than value. Had an 8PM reservation - the 20 something hostess said they were "overtbooked" that night, and we'd have to wait - she smiled, and sent us to sit and wait in the almost empty bar area. Twenty minutes later, after telling us it would be only 10 minutes more, we were still waiting. At 8:35, I asked to speak to a manager - there were lots of people milling about, but no one seemed to be in charge. It took 10 minutes for a manager to finally arrive, and we were seated at last at 8;45 at a table which faced a wall. The noise level was beyond loud, so normal conversation was impossible. We ordered drinks and 3 types of cheese. For $20 for the cheese, it was barely enough for 1 person to eat, not to mention 4.......skimpy is the word that comes to mind. Appetizers (salads) were average, although the eggplant and tomato terrine was tasty. OK...so one big suggesiton - get rid of the IPAD wine lists - this is ridiculous and awkward to use. Give me a written wine list that I can look through, and then discuss with the sommelier.....trendy might be cute, but it isn't efficient , and IPad wine lists don't belong in restaurants that want to give the image of high end. It was cute for 10 minutes, then became annoying. The wait for our food was way too long. When I asked the waiter if it's always that slow, he said, well it was busy that night. ...that's no excuse. The waiter was far from sophisticated or attentive. He couldn't get the plates right, and we had to switch around to get the food we ordered. - also no excuse for that . He got the coffees wrong, too...it was my daughter-in-law's birthday, and when her mom made the reservation she requested a candle be put on the dessert - she requested that a 2nd time when reconfirming the res., and was assured it was "in the computer".Well, of course - no candle came. We were offered free desserts and coffee, but by then our meal was ruined. At that point, nothing could make up for the poor service, high noise level, long wait for our table AND food.... even had to ask to have water glasses refilled....all the things that go into making a meal memorable were mssing from this place. It is now opened 1 year - the kinks should be gone.....after nights like we had, the customers will be gone instead. Oh, and the bar was practically empty when we left at 11:30 - not a good sign.

    Delicious and Fun

Had a great experience. We had to wait for 15 minutes for a table but while we were waiting we were treated at the bar to complementary olives and focaccia with prosciutto. The bar area is kind of dark and unremarkable but the dining room is enormous with an open kitchen and has a lot of energy. The food was superb - the uovo ravioli was the best ravioli i have ever had. The sweetbreads and the beef cheeks were amazing. The panna cotta was light and fantastic. Good wine menu (although I would lose the electronic gadget). The dessert wines are wonderful. Service was great and the owner came around and introduced herself and made some fabulous recomendations. A little pricey but a great experience overall.

    Great food, lousy service

I went here Saturday night, we were a group of 8 people. Like another reviewer said below they tried to sit us a table with bar stools, I refused to spend all night sitting on a stool, with no back. So they squeezed 8 big chairs and it was tight but much better then the stools. My advice to this restaurant is to get rid of the stools immediately and get some chairs that fit. No one wants to spend that kind of money on dinner and sit on a stool, i felt almost insulted when they tried to seat us there. The electronic wine library is so stupid, it takes for ever to go thru, just give me a menu, much easier. After wasting my time doing that, we ordered a bunch of apps. We got some prosciutto and cheese, delish! We also ordered the octopus entree as an app, which was excellent but definitely small, we got a seafood salad & the eggplant. Everything tasted very good, but the portions were extremely small and we ordered a second round of appetizers. After the second round, a few people at the table ordered pasta appetizers. If you have to order 3 rounds of appetizers in order to get full then I think there is a problem with the portions. I got the scallops as my main and they was awesome!! We ordered 3 bottles of wine for the 8 of us, so we really did not drink that much and the bill came out to be $130pp. Although the food was very good I don't think it was worth $130 a person. I would of prefered to eat at Nobu and spend that kind of money. Plus the waiter was a jerk, gave me an attitude for asking him if I could switch something. He also didn't come by the table that much.

    Second time around

We had such a good meal the first time we went back with friends to see if the restaurant lived up to our expectations. Indeed, it was even better than the first . We must have been on the repeat list because from the hostess to the waitstaff they all welcomed us back. We started with the an assortment from the Salumeria, delicious meats though a bit pricey. On to the pastas. Someone had ordered the special ravioli stuffed with shredded beef and an onion sauce. It was fabulous. The SD26 pasta w/tomato and basil was light and flavorful. As was the Dover Sole entree. Grilled Scallops another winner. Desserts and Dessert wine was to die for. Once again an enjoyable and delicious meal
