Saravanaas/ Saravana Bhavan

What started off as one of the better South Indian offerings in Curry Hill, has been steadily slipping downhill. Either the proprietor's attention is now focused on expanding into NJ, or they just don't care and feel they don't need to make the effort to maintain standards. Service is haphazard and inefficient on most weekends, and the food tastes like that of any other run of the mill South Indian restaurant. Phone calls routinely go into an automated response, making it difficult to place orders for delivery if one wants to.

Saravanaa's has amazing food for a great price. I've been here three times in the past month, and I always want to go back again!

I found this place after work and was one of the few people in the restaurant. Waiter patiently answered my questions and when I inquired about "a little of everything" he pointed me to the tasting menu dish (cannot remember the name.) For about $15.95 you get basmati rice, two kinds of naan, and 10 small cups of various curries and chutneys. It even includes a small warm tapioca dish for dessert. I wish they had labeled each sample, as some were great and some I did not care for. If you're new to Indian cuisine or just want to amuse your palet, definitely ask for this dish. Can feed one person or two if you get another order of rice.

Well! Everything changed. Food used to be excellent. Not now. I think there should be change of kitchen staff or was this due to cost saving. Now food is not good. Not South Indian. It tases like North Indian. Poor service as usual. No proper cleaning of utensils. Again that must be due to cost saving or they do not know how to clean spoons and knives.

I think the sambar here is to die for! However, some of the curries (especially the chana masala) used to taste far better before than they do now ... was there a major change in the chefs or cooks?

My wife and I have been frequenting this establishment for the past two years, and have found the food to be excellent on every ocassion. To quote a co-worker (who by the way happens to be Indian) "the place is off the hook". Some of the other reviews complained about the service, my wife and I have never found the service to be sub par. While the service is not the best in the world, we have allways found the staff freindly at least. To pass up the oppurtunity to sample some trully delightfull cuisine, due to the service complaints of some of the reviewers would be a loss on your part.

A sign that this place is worth going to is that it is always busy and many patrons are Indian. Ever since I stumbled across the vegetable paratha dish, I cannot order anything else from the menu. This dish is so good, I've always have my dining companions try it and they agree. It is mixed veggies and sliced up paratha all in one, the flavor and texture are amazing. I highly recommend it if you want a change from the standard dosa.
