Saravanaas/ Saravana Bhavan

I had lunch with my friend and we loved it. Very fresh and good quality. The tables are kinda small to hold the huge dosas, and very close together. The decor is simple, like an Indian canteen look, but it certainly lacks a south Indian flair to it. I had the Mysore dosa and it was good. Idly was light and puffy. All the chutneys were awesome. I would definitely go back. Compared to other restaurants who make south indian dishes, this restaurant surpasses it all. Keep the fresh and good quality theme going, and you will gain good customers. Customer service needs some training for sure.

This restaurant is full of happily dining Indians at dinner and all weekend... so it's a real sign that shouts good indian food. Having said that, not everything on the menu is fantastic, we've had a couple of misses and the service is one of the worst in Manhattan.

I used to really like the food at this place, the service was always poor and RUDE, but the food was great, so i kept on going. But now the food matches the awful service. it takes forever to get food, its cold by the time it comes out and half the time the server forgets all or part of your order, and he rarely pretends to even care.

This is an upbeat, modern spot with disappointingly mediocre food. The onion pakoras arrived as soon as we ordered them, and were greasy and thick with too much breading (chickpea batter). A vegetable dish normally served "dry" (i.e., with most of its liquid cooked off) was swimming in an oily sauce and accompanied by a disproportionately tiny amount of rice. All dishes tasted pre-prepared and microwaved. Not recommended.

They have the grumpiest waiters serving you. The service is bad. And the waiters unhelpful. Seems like they're doing you a favor by serving you. And it's over priced priced for food like this. I was extremely disappointed that even after paying higher than any other restuarant with the same food, their customer service is so poor. They don't know how to treat their customers.

I have been going to this place for the last 4 years and in the most recent visits the service has been going south. In this visit, it was really bad. We had to wait for a menu for 15 min and the after the order it took more than half hour for the food. The food was not good as well. My onion Uthappam was not fully prepared. Overall a bad experience and I would stop going to this place.

Having eaten phenomenal homecooked Indian food and phenomenal restaurant cooked food in India, I'm in a good position to state: this place is as good as it gets in Manhattan. You don't go there for the decor, which is functional, but for the food, which rocks. Now that they've expanded into the space next door (a former restaurant that couldn't compete), there's plenty of space for everyone. A lifelong Manhattan food connoisseur, Saravanas is one of my top 10 NY restaurants.
