Saravanaas/ Saravana Bhavan

Authentic South Indian Food. No doubt about it. However the items are unreasonably priced. Too high. Decor should improve. Service is scary. When I entered the restaurant some one shouted " Go and sitdown at any single table". The staff need to learn courtesy. Should consider about pricing.

Finally a place with some good South Indian cuisine. I agree that the service isn't the best but if you balance out the food with the service, it is a must try place. If you don't "do" the spicy stuff, there is enough other stuff. The plain steamed idli and medhu vadas are excellent starters (and if you just lightly use the chutneys, you will be fine). The paper masala dosa is excellent and a must try just for the experience of being served this massive crispy crepe. For another classic, go for the whole wheat rava dosa. The Madras coffee is just like we drank in India. They even bring you the stainless steel bowl to transfer the coffee into, stir in your sweetner, then pour it back into the small stainless steel cup. That along with the Rava Kesari and you will be totally satisfied when you walk out. The atmosphere is bright and clean, though usually quite busy.

I have been thrice at this restaurant and have found the service to be very arrogant and poor. Once my friend ordered a dosa and it was cold. On complaining the person in charge said that it went cold because we were staring at it and refused to take it back and get us another one. At other times the waiter has attitude problems in taking and order and does even look at us. On finishing our meal we were asked to leave, as more customers were waiting outside, even as we were waiting for them to get back our credit cards. The quality of food combined with the service is below average. I absolutety do not plan to got back to this restaurant again!!

This is the best South Indian food in the city by far! I should know I'm south indian! The waiters are patient and helpful. Unfortunately due to how busy this place is, the service is a bit slow. The thalis are fablous and the mini ghee idlies are hevenly. The dosa here is average, (I've had better) but the sambar more then makes up for it! I highly recommend this place to everyone.

I'm no expert on Indian food but, IMHO, Saravanaas is sublime. The food is supurb and the waiter patiently went over the menu with me and made marvelous suggestions. Sure it took a little time for the waiter to show up but nearly every seat in the house was full.

Great food but good luck getting seated. Seating is completely random, the waiters seat whoever they want to in any order they like. Bad service continues after being seated. On occasions the waiters tend to vent their frustrations on the patrons when the place gets full. Mistakes are made frequently and the patron is accused of ordering wrong, or jumping the line to be seated. Very hard to get the attention of the waiters even just for water. If it wasn't for the food this place would be the dumps.

Excellent south indian food. Definitely try the kaima Idli for a unique spin on that staple of the south. Service is disturbingly slow however so try to choose a less busy time. Generally avoid times from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on weekdays and 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on weekends and 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM on all days.
