Great food and affordable too
Well worth a trip, wait to be seated or take out. Truly a gem for lower NYC :)

Serious decline
I arrived in the E. Village the same year Sapporo East opened (1981). It used to be a regular, several times a month treat for me, but I hadn't been there since a fire a year and a half ago forced them to close for a while. Went there the other night, and ordered my usual "sashimi deluxe". I was disappointed in both the portion and the quality. The only thing that remained excellent was the service, which I tipped generously. Honestly, certain portions of the meal were inedible. The restaurant tried compensating with a few extra pieces of salmon. The "deluxe" version of their sashimi contains the exact same amount as their old regular size sashimi. I doubt I'll be back.

Intrigued solved!
When I first moved to the East Village a year and a half ago, I noticed that this restaurant was PACKED almost all the time. Then I learned that they didn't deliver....Hmmmm. What restaurant in NYC doesn't deliver? The intrigue grew! Then, no lunch specials? Again, hmmm? We finally went there tonight, and now I understand. I love it there. It reminds me of the old Japanese restaurants before the sushi craze kicked in... Rustic, not treandy and chic (I only gave it 4.5 for atmosphere due to the techny, yucky music). The food was fresh and quite good. And all the employees there were very nice and seemed genuinely happy to serve you and to be there. Yet, another unusual aspect this place has over most restaurants in NYC...

Real Japanese food
It's real Japanese and it taste really good! It's more like a small but nice place to share a great dinner with the close friend, instead of big high-class restaurant. But i do love here, and enjoy everything here!

Good sushi rolls good prices
A punk Japanese sushi place with a great selection of rolls, fresh fish, and reasonable prices. It's one of the few places in the East Village to air-condition sufficiently in the summer and the staff is attentive by EV standards.

Solid fish, great value
It's a solid spot in this hood. Servers are friendly. The food is quality and not too expensive.
