Rude service
Came here twice and nobody ever bothered for a Hi or a Thanks. If I'll ever go back, I'll make sure to bring a bottle of water with me, as nobody would refill your glass during dinner...pizza was good, nothing to die for, but the way they treat customers in here is just ridiculous!

Hands down a go to place
There are only a handful of great places on the Upper East Side. This one is awesome. This is as Italian as you can get, everything comes from Italy. This pizza is so good it's worth the trip uptown and it's so good it's worth it to wait in line outside the restaurant for the pizza. If you're on the UES and you haven't tried it, you hate pizza and are a tool. Caveat being that you should eat at the restaurant, the pizza is so thin and delicate (like a butterfly on a midsummer's eve) that by the time you get it to your gross little walk up it's wings will have wilted. Leave your mom at home and get your self some pizza at San Matteo.

Disappointing pizza
Read the reviews. Very confusing because some people say it is great, and others say it is poor. Took a chance to order from there anyway. After tonight would have to side with those who say it is poor. I got a pizza to go - it was stone cold when I got it home. It was burned on the bottom, and had fresh spinach on it, which was not cleaned well enough, so it was gritty. Ugh! Also, it was a fairly small pizza for $14.00. Not what I would expect of a NYC pizza restaurant. I thought the pizza would be delicious. The service was good and can't really comment on the atmosphere because I got it to go.

Best pizza in town!
After reading the about the restaurant I went from Westchester NY to NYC to see for my self, I was simply curious. I eat out a lot and I thought I'd see what this place had to offer. Turns out, this small place blew my mind! the food, the servers were great! I felt like I was in a cafe in Italy all over.. I would definitely go back. this cafe makes everything fresh! I have been there 3 times in the last month and I cant wait to try something else.... Just simply great food, fresh pizza, great wine selection....

Best pizza on the upper east side
There is none better. the only caveat being that you want to eat it fresh there, once it gets to your home it's not quite as good as at the restaurant. There is a reason that people are waiting outside to get in. If upper east side had more places like this, it would be a worthwhile hang out neighborhood.

Gnocchi was a let down!
I ordered from San Matteo last night being that I live a block away and was always curious. Reading the reviews on here I opted for 2 orders of the gnocchi. The portion size was ridiculous! When my boyfriend went to eat it later he thought he had grabbed my left overs by mistake. Not to mention the gnocchi was definitely not fresh! You can the same (if not better gnocchi) from Milano deli up the street for literally $3.00 and for twice as much food, needless to say will not be ordering from San Matteo again, a huge disappointment.

Really lovely food. Really lovely people. Really a lot like Italy.
I discovered this place for lunch last weekend, and was back the next day for dinner. It was that good. I've had the prosciutto pizza, the calzone with ricotta and soppresetta, the focaccia, and the eggplant special appetizer. The calzone and the eggplant special took my breath away. Both contained some very fresh ricotta. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the service was great both visits. The owner was very friendly and accommodating, and a young female server at dinner was extremely attentive. This place is a gift to the neighborhood. Clearly they take pride in what they're offering.
