San Matteo Panuozzo

Read the reviews. Very confusing because some people say it is great, and others say it is poor. Took a chance to order from there anyway. After tonight would have to side with those who say it is poor. I got a pizza to go - it was stone cold when I got it home. It was burned on the bottom, and had fresh spinach on it, which was not cleaned well enough, so it was gritty. Ugh! Also, it was a fairly small pizza for $14.00. Not what I would expect of a NYC pizza restaurant. I thought the pizza would be delicious. The service was good and can't really comment on the atmosphere because I got it to go.

After reading the about the restaurant I went from Westchester NY to NYC to see for my self, I was simply curious. I eat out a lot and I thought I'd see what this place had to offer. Turns out, this small place blew my mind! the food, the servers were great! I felt like I was in a cafe in Italy all over.. I would definitely go back. this cafe makes everything fresh! I have been there 3 times in the last month and I cant wait to try something else.... Just simply great food, fresh pizza, great wine selection....

There is none better. the only caveat being that you want to eat it fresh there, once it gets to your home it's not quite as good as at the restaurant. There is a reason that people are waiting outside to get in. If upper east side had more places like this, it would be a worthwhile hang out neighborhood.

I ordered from San Matteo last night being that I live a block away and was always curious. Reading the reviews on here I opted for 2 orders of the gnocchi. The portion size was ridiculous! When my boyfriend went to eat it later he thought he had grabbed my left overs by mistake. Not to mention the gnocchi was definitely not fresh! You can the same (if not better gnocchi) from Milano deli up the street for literally $3.00 and for twice as much food, needless to say will not be ordering from San Matteo again, a huge disappointment.

I discovered this place for lunch last weekend, and was back the next day for dinner. It was that good. I've had the prosciutto pizza, the calzone with ricotta and soppresetta, the focaccia, and the eggplant special appetizer. The calzone and the eggplant special took my breath away. Both contained some very fresh ricotta. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the service was great both visits. The owner was very friendly and accommodating, and a young female server at dinner was extremely attentive. This place is a gift to the neighborhood. Clearly they take pride in what they're offering.

Hands down - best pizza in the city. Get the pizza with prosciutto and truffle oil. You wont be sorry.

I have been eating at San Matteo since it opened last year.. things have gotten better, service wise, and the pizza, panuozzo, and the occasional special ( I stick to the gnocchi alla Sorentina), make this my go-to place twice a month. Pizza is in my DNA, so its wonderful to see how the dough, made by the same person, can sometimes taste different, look different.. I asked the pizzaioulo and he agreed, and said " strangely, it can sometime depend on the strenght of my hands for shaping it or the weather for elasticity." Well, returned this week and had the roast pork panuozzo which was divine and large enough for lunch the next day. Looking foward to returning to San Matteo in a few weeks.
