Subpar food, I eat it all the time

Although the cooks are Mexican, the menu is not. Nothing is cooked to order for any dish. There is not even a hot grill in the kitchen. They do all the cooking in a big batch. When you order, the cook spoons some warm slop and awful vegetables onto a tortilla and maybe sticks it in a microwave for a few seconds. Seriously. So now we arrive at the only good reason to eat at San Loco: they are open until 4:00 or 5:00 AM unlike any other Mexican restaurant in the area. The full bar with reasonable prices is a nice bonus. And they are better than those Korean operated pseudo Mexican places you find in Midtown. However, if you find the taco truck that has been parking on St Marks lately, go there because it blows away San Loco and is open just as late.

    Needs improvement

Each time I return to this place, which is rare, I am reminded of why I stayed away: they're cheap. Not inexpensive. Stingy. The most insulting to anybody's intelligence is the one quarter of a thin sliver of hard, unripe tomato that is put on one's food. Taco Bell puts a big scoop of fresh diced tomato an everything for a fraction of the price. This is not a rare earth metal, it's a tomato. Don't insult your customers when you've got a reasonably decent thing going, and don't charge them another buck to give them another piece of tomato the size of a quarter.

    Never Fails

I have been going to San Loco for 3 years now and I have yet to be disappointed. Strong drinks, friendly service and cheap food, (Rice and Bean Guaco Loco is great for vegetarians) keep me coming back. They also have the cleanest bathrooms in the East Village.

    puzzled by the flavor

I checked this place out after trying to find the closest Mexican food joint near my work. Saw a sign in the window about City Search Best Mexican Restaurant, and got excited. Food was prepared quickly. The salad portion was huge. BUT...my burriot tasted rather odd. Not odd-odd, but not that Mexican-flavor-I-was-looking-for odd.

    What is it?

I travel often to Mexico and have been going there for years and I've never had anything there that tastes like the stuff served up at San Loco. I don't know what it is--it's not Mexican, and it's pretty lousy.

    Can you say Loco!

For those of you bitcin about soggy shells, bad service, having to make your own burrito, and what ever else, no one cares. The fact is that this place makes THE BEST hard shell beef tacos on the planet, period. Their mixture of coriander and cumin spices give the meat a unique flavor. This place has developed a bit of a cult following over the years. It's a hole in the wall type of restaurant, with a hole in the wall. Everything is made fresh to order and should be eaten immediately to avoid soggy shell syndrome. Try a combination of the stupid and serious sauce if you're looking to spice up your life. I have been coming here for as long as I can remember and still have only tried the hard shell beef tacos, though I hear the rest of the food is not too shabby either. If you're ever in Miami, try their South Beach location. The food is even better late night after a cocktails. And remember if you don't like it, NO ONE CARES because we LOVE IT!
