Because Sam's is small (and cozy), it takes only one loud person or table to affect everyone. The food and service are excellent but the last three times I have been there, loud people at nearby tables made the experience unpleasant. Recently. a lone diner talking very loud on a cellphone was impossible to ignore and we couldn't wait to leave. A few restaurants have initiated a no cellphone policy which makes the dining experience pleasant for those of us who wish to enjoy good food AND the company of our friends. I hope Sam's will consider doing this. Everyone thought the ban on smoking would ruin business. It didn't and neither will a polite ban on cellphones.

We were standing at the door reading the menu when a couple told us "we're local and the food is great." We followed them in, they were right, we felt the need to buy their dinner. We do Italian regularly and this was as good as it gets.

Visited Sam's Place with my wife last month and had a most enjoyable meal - exquisitely prepared in the classic Italian style. Although that was our first visit, we were trated by the host and waiters like old friends. The food (the evening's special veal dish for me and the linguini with clams for my wife) was simple but elegant and the accompanying bread and wine were both superb. We went back to Sam's Place this past weekend and we were welcomed back with open arms and hearty handshakes -- they did remember us -- and the food was again excellent (this time lemon sole). The host came over to our table a number of times and was genuinely interested in our dining experience. Will return again (and again). Highly recommended.

Although our food was delicious and service was ok, our experience was ruined by the obnoxious, loud & rude behavior of the two tables next to us ... not only were they loud, but their language was inappropriate for a fine dining experience. Since this is a tiny restaurant, it is the owner's responsibility to step forward & attempt to quiet such a situation that is clearly bothering all other diners. We couldn't have any conversation because we could not hear a word the other was saying. It appeared that a free bottle of wine was given to the worst offender when he left, yet no compensation was even offered to the diners who had to endure the extreme "bar room" behavior. The owners never once asked them to quiet down.

They make you feel like you are very welcome. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is wonderful. If there is something that you want but is not on the menu - they will make it for you. The prices are good and the food is fresh.

Met up with 3 depressed co-workers for dinner Tuesday night. Amazing. We left happy and all felt we'd discovered a real New York treasure. Massimo welcomed us like family, advised us, visited & checked on us. I was reminded of the mythical Grand Ticino depicted in Moonstruck; a place that neighbors who know visit regularly for excellent dinner, and attentive service. Two of us had the veal scallopini. It was fresh, fine, lightly breaded and extremely tender; superb! Massimo himself recommended the wines to accompany the courses. The atmosphere inspired us to focus our conversation on hopes for the future rather than the mutual whining session we had planned! I hope your experience is as delightful as ours was. I look forward to bringing other family and friends.
