Best sandwiches around
Saltie's, hands-down, has the most delicious, albeit a little decadent, sandwiches in the hood. I get out there about once a week. The Scuttlebutt is my signature jam, but I can also speak very highly of the Clean Slate and the Captain's Daughter. With regards to all the service complaints--no one there is rude, or passive agressive. They just arent...nice. Frankly, its a very craftsman-like attitude, and if it produces results like that, I have no need for fake pleasantries. I mainly use it as a take-out occasion, as the seating is limited and the line to order food tends to press up close to those patrons eating. Couldn't recommend the food enough. I've taken several chef-friends there, and they are now hooked.

amazing food, angry service
I LOVE the food at Saltie, but if you're expecting service with a smile you won't get it here. Every single time I go in the same angry furrowed-brow lady reluctantly takes my order and points to the board to make me feel like an idiot for any 'duh' answers I might ask (which has been twice at best and perfectly legitimate questions). If I'm eating in, I ignore the 'insider' feel of this place if there is one because a. it's Williamsburg and that's to be expected, and b. I'm enjoying my delicious sandwich. This doesn't stop me from coming back for a Scuttlebutt or a Captain's Daughter, but could use a little tweaking on the customer service, no matter how good the food is.

ditto on the last headline
High quality ingredients and boldly salty/savory flavor combinations .. but yeah, the service is disarmingly abrupt and insider-y. The high prices and brand forwardness are professional but they can be sloppy on actually making consistently good sandwiches, and surly in a this-is-not-Phoebe's-circa-2000 kind of way.

underwhelmed with a hint of frustration
Ups: The people here are very nice, though I felt a bit of an outsider since they were so busy chatting with their friends. The baked goods looked very good and I tried a sample of an olive cake. It was fine, but looked better than it tasted. I would be fair and suggest you try the baked goods, since I didn't. Ingredients were all very fresh. Problems: The menus are scribbled on paper and not easy to read. The names of the sandwiches are obnoxious (I got the "Scuttlebutt"). The sandwich was made with fresh ingredients but it was more like a salad on bread. It fell apart immediately. I requested "easy on the aioli" and for whatever reason, I received double the aioli. The sandwich was fresh, but oily, unbalanced (huge slab of feta overwhelms). I wanted to like this place, but realistically, I was underwhelmed and a bit frustrated. At $8.00, one can score a serious sandwich in Manhattan. I will probably opt for something different next time.

Good Food - Bad Logistics
I tried Saltie for the first time yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my sandwich. The logistics of the place, though, are terrible- vague menu, uncomfortable tiny seats, and kinda surly service. I'll probably give it another shot, but will opt for take-out.

Killer food !!! (service???)
Great sandwhich, don't bother calling in your order. They say 10min they mean 40min. They try to be nice, tremendous addition to the hood. Will definitly go back.

some kinks to work out but a solid addition to the neighborhood
my husband and i are huge (huge!) fans of diner so we were very excited to try salties. so far we've stopped by once for breakfast and once for lunch. observations: the main problem is that the sandwiches they are making are ill-equipped for travel (an egg/ricotta breakfast sandwich, while delicious, needed to be eaten with a fork and knife as it was so messy; meanwhile, the italian meatball pita sandwich has a yogurt sauce that leaked all over the place--we ate it in the car--and made the bread soggy only 10 mins after ordering). so basically it's an "eat-in" place, however the stools they have are possibly the worst (comfort-wise) i've encountered in any establishment. i'm a size 4 and i could barely fit myself in one, not to mention your legs dangle awkwardly/uncomfortable b/c there's no foot rests. other big problem is that they have quirky/cute names for the sandwiches on the menu board but no descriptions. so you have no idea what each sandwich consists of until you get to the counter, at which point the person behind the register has to go through everything one-by-one with you. this is cumbersome and irritating, as i like to be able to see a description, compare and contrast with other items, and mull it all over in my head before i have someone staring at me waiting for me to make my decision. but it's the food that drew us there and what will continue to draw us back. sandwich combinations are inventive, ingredients are top-notch, and the baked goods are amazing (love the ricotta loaf). i think they need to tweak their offerings so that they're more to-go-friendly (as this is not a place you want to lounge around in), and it would be nice if they offered daily specials, diner-style.
