Hoped for Better
My boyfriend and I went to Salt a few weeks ago for dinner, and I had been looking forward to trying the food for months. When we arrived we were seated promptly and brought water and menus. However, the service thereafter was very slow, which was OK as we were in no rush, but very noticeable. We did not place our drink order until the waiter came back to take our appetizer order. He did not return to take our dinner order until the appetizers were delivered, and we requested to order the rest of our meal. The waiter did not check on us at all while we ate to find out if everything was OK or if we needed anything. The restaurant is very small and was not busy on the night we were there, which made the slow service less understandable. The food quality was good, and everything was tasty. We ordered the dates with bacon, as well as the risotto to start, and both were delicious. For dinner I had halibut with pancetta and mushrooms, and my boyfriend had lamb shank. Both meals were good, but not the best. My fish was a little bit salty (which I suppose may have something to do with the name of the restaurant?) and my boyfriend's meat was cooked well, but he commented that the portion was a bit small. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. A small, intimate place with comfortable seats. However, the one major complaint I have, which I think affected my overall experience was that the restaurant was extremely hot inside. We were there on a 90 degree plus night, and no windows were open and the air did not seem to be working. I am usually cold or comfortable, and I was extremely hot the entire time. The heat was mainly due to the fact that the restaurant is so small and is open to the kitchen, allowing for the oven and stove heat to escape throughout. However it would have been nice if they compensated for this with some fresh air to cool things down. I like that the menu is seasonal, and would consider giving the food here another try on the hopes that we were there on an off night.

Excellent!
Came to Salt with the fiancée about a month ago and loved all about it! A nice and cozy place that offers reasonably priced food of excellent quality and presentation. A real gem in its league! Going back to Salt again in a few weeks from now.

Great Food, Greater Service
What a pleasant find in Soho. Salt is charming, polished in all the right places and contains zero attitude. The service was impeccable – our server (told she has been there 4 years) could teach Danny Myer a thing or two. She was attentive, knowledgeable, friendly without being overly so, and sincere. Her recommendations were spot on and she smilingly answered my numerous questions. The manager checked our table twice to answer any questions and also very friendly and helpful. The Food – Grade A! well presented with a good balance of flavors. The beet ravioli were light, clean and tasty with hints of carrot and mint. The pasta with sausage and rabe was excellent. It was rich and creamy (due to the marscapone), and the homemade sausage with fennel was perfect with loads of flavor. Our starter salad of goat cheese, fennel and chive was average. A bit too much chive in the dish (and kinda high priced for a salad). Overall: excellent food, excellent service. Recommended for a date or a nite out.

Bland food, the whole grilled fish was fishy and i stopped eating it after a few bites. Roasted veggies bland.

Favorite
My favorite restaurant in the city. Fantastic sea food preparation, terrific service and an adventurous (and very reasonably priced) wine menu. This is perfect for a date or, if you go on a weeknight, great for small parties. The appetizers and sides are all wonderful. The cauliflower soup is a terrific starter, as are the dates wrapped in bacon. The sides are well-portioned and not over saturated with sauces and spices. The cod is expert, as the dates, cabbage and creme fraiche give it a balanced flavor. My date loved the chicken, though she regretted not ordering the cod. I've had the flounder which is terrific too, and would recommend it as a value with two sides.

Already planning my next visit
Best bacon-wrapped dates I've had. Grilled whole fish +2 sides was delicious and perfect for sharing. Can't stop thinking about the lemon tart with earl grey ice cream.

Nice place to try
Came here for dinner and it was very crowded (but I like to think that's a good sign - and it was). My date and I started out with this crispy salmon jerky as an appetizer. Both are meals were wonderful. I ordered the organic chicken breast with cauliflower puree and ate every last bite. Dinner would have been close to $100, but we used a Restaurant.com coupon (and I'm very glad we did). I think the portions were alright, just a little smaller for my taste but the food we ate was yummy.
