you don't go here to hang out.

sometimes you NEED a hole in the wall to fill a void - in this case, one caused by hunger. you want cheap, decent (this is no eleven madison park fare, but it's edible) eats that won't break the wallet? you go here. breakfast platters like scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries & bacon (toast on the side if you want!) won't cost more than 6$. that's a great deal. i believe this place is also halal so you won't find pork products. this would explain why the bacon in my BLT seemed a little weird. lunch time - you could check out a huge slab of meat-filled lasagna. it's been ages since i've had the indian food (all of these foods are pre-prepared in the back kitchen) but i remember it being passable for the neighborhood. herald square isn't known for its abundance of indian food. so, yeah, this place is not terrible. it's not where i'd go for a date, or even an out-of-office lunch, but i do stop in to pick up breakfast or lunch before heading back to the office.

    Not for Indian

Tried this after reading several reviews. Ordered the lunch platter with rice, gobi aloo (cauliflower & potatoes), and chicken tikka masala. The portion is huge, but I thought it was bland. The cauliflower was mushier than expected and the chicken (big chunks of white meat) just wasn't super flavorful. Overall, filling and reasonably priced, but I'd go elsewhere for Indian food in the neighborhood. That said, the hot bar up front looked interesting (especially the roasted chicken), and they had a steady stream of diners walking in. Worth checking out for a reasonable, filling meal.

what were the other reviews thinking?

I would like to start by saying, i recently visited "Salt and Pepper" because of the positive responses i read on menu pages. Claims that the atmosphere was good, the lighting was just right, and the food to die for..... well i think those reviews must have been phony. Salt and pepper is a hole in the wall indian joint, with dingy tables and florecent lighting. the food is not made fresh, but scooped into a metal tin or on a plastic plate from a hot table buffet. This is not as much a restaurant, but a cheap indian fast food joint. They servers were very pleasant, and the portions are quite large, but it didnt taste like the high quality indian food i am accostume to. The naan was decent, but the chicken tikka masala was dry, and liquidy,, not thick and creamy like it usualy is. If you want down and dirty take out- this is it. if you want to take someone to a nice indian restaraunt this is not it. happy eating!

    Great Experience

I had never been to Salt & Pepper before a few of us went for a birthday dinner. It was such a delightful surprise. The food and the presentation were great. The staff were accommodating and just very relaxed and chill - really into making the experience good for you. The atmosphere did it for me. If you like to eat at tables set up family style, this is the place to go. The lighting is perfectly dimmed, gorgeously placed bouquets on the tables and a very french country vibe. It's worth it.
