New Discovery- Indian Gem!
Was very happy I read a chowhound post before we wandered around TriBeca last night and passed Salaam Bombay. Companion had only had Indian food 3 times prior, so I was charged with ordering all but the wine. Dinner was delicious. We had the assorted appetizers, sea bass with coriander sauce steamed in banana leaves and accompanied with a tomato/onion/mango sauce, a curry chicken dish, garlic naan, a side and a Simi cabernet. For dessert we had gulab jaman and our host provided a complimentary rice pudding garnished with pistachios. Ambience was lovely as we dined outdoors to the sounds of sitar music. Service was excellent.

Excellent
The food is spiced to perfection and cooked with excellent technique. They have a wide selection of dishes and the atmosphere is welcoming. Salaam is expensive, but worth the money. If you can, go for the lunch buffet.

Always Delightful
I have grown up on salaam bombay's food. They easily are the best indian food new york, be it vegetarian or non vegetarian delights, they hit the spot. Love their service, they treat you like a guest & not like a customer, which is very pleasing in a commercial establishment. The food is of finest quality. We love it here.

Love Salaam
For the people who said they couldn't find vegetarian options, I have to wonder if they somehow wandered into the wrong place. I've been vegetarian for ten years, and found many savory items to choose from. I love Indian food and think Salaam is one of the very best choices in downtown NYC, if not the best. Service could use some work, but the food makes it worth the trip.

Catered to non-vegetarians
The quality of food has gone down compared to 4-5 years back. For vegetarians, there are not many options. I found out that the whole wheat bread content is majority of white flour. Maybe this is true for all Indian restaurants!

Made us feel at home...
After reading some of the reviews we were a bit apprehensive to go there for dinner, especially with a "newbie" to Indian cuisine. Our fears only worsened when there were only two other tables of customers. But what a wonderful surprise awaited us!!! We were greeted and treated like long lost family. Our waiter took extra time with our friend and explained everything to her in great detail. He even gave us a few free side dishes for us to try. All 3 of our meals were absolutely wonderful. When we were asked about dessert we declined because we were so stuffed. Our waiter brought out 2 desserts for us to try - he said, "You can't leave without something sweet." All I can say is "Wow" what royal treatment and what great food. Sorry to hear that not everyone has been treated like we were. We'll be back again and again and again.....
