For a chain restaurant, it's very good

I know a lot of New Yorkers, myself included, try to avoid chain restaurants simply because there are so many other restaurants in the city that we (or at least I) feel it unnecessary to go to a chain. Well, Ruth Chris is now my exception to the rule. I don't know what the complaints are below - I've dined here twice in the past two months. The quality is excellent, service is excellent, so, I can only conclude that the people making complaints are doing so to get attention or the type who will never be satisfied. If you go with the mind set this is NOT a 5 star establishment BUT is a good place to get a steak dinner or lunch, you aren't going to be disappointed. Overall, I rate it a 4 out of 5 and this is coming from someone who dines at 21 regularly...

    Not recommended

Two of my friends and I went on Thursday, July 24th for restaurant week as it seemed like a prime time to give a new steak house a try. If Ruth Chris was putting their best foot forward then I'd hate to come back on a normal night. The appetizers were bland and the sides tasted like canned/instant food you would buy for change in a grocery store. The actual steaks are drowned in buttor (there was a lump of unmelted butter left on my friend's steak) hiding any flavor in the meat which I suppose was the point. The special menu offered a South African red wine which was excellent but only offered by the glass. When we requested a bottle or recommendation for another SA wine we were then referred to a much more expensive (double the price) California wine. The atmosphere was also very dark and basement-like (not in a romantic type of way) - definitely not a date place. With all the steak house choices in NYC this is one to avoid.

    Supper Club Review

This is a top-notch steakhouse located in NYC. We are very happy to give this restaurant two thumbs up. This is their only location in New York City. Our experience follows. Tina and I dined at this establishment on Saturday, May 2, 2009 prior to going to an off-Broadway show. It was a great experience. We arrived about 5 minutes prior to our scheduled reservation time and were given a table immediately. Before our waitress even came by, we were served water and bread. Nikki, our waitress, took our orders soon thereafter. Ruth’s Chris has an extensive wine list, however we cannot offer any feedback on this as neither one of us drank wine. The menu at Ruth’s Chris is very good however be aware that everything is “a-la-carte” meaning if you order a Ribeye steak, you get a Ribeye steak. Period. The potato, salad, soup, or anything else you want has to be ordered separately. But they also have a deal whereby a complete meal can be purchased including dessert. Both Tina and I partook in this. First of all, however, we ordered a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. They were fantastic. The sauce for dipping was perfect. It had the perfect amount of kick to it. Tina made the comment that the shrimp were so big, they could be deemed as tiny Lobsters! But they were extremely good. For our main course, Tina ordered a Filet Mignon and I ordered a Ribeye steak. Salad was the first course. Note to everyone that they do include raw onions on your salad so if you are not a raw onion fan, ask for them to be left off. Then came the steaks. Wow. The are served on a sizzling plate that is about 450 degrees. The steak actually is still cooking when it is served at your table. The side dishes were then brought out, mashed potatoes for Tina and a grilled tomato for me. The thickness of the Filet Mignon was amazing. Cooked perfectly for Tina (medium). My Ribeye was a bit undercooked but Nikke promptly took care of remedying that. The Grilled Tomato was good also, even though I expressed to Tina some ideas on how it could be better. Once the Ribeye came back out, it was perfect in every sense. Taste was unreal, very little fat, and it was a very good portion. Tina raved about her meal as well. To sum up, this was a delightful meal in a fantastic restaurant. The atmosphere in there was great, the noise level was not too bad even though the seating is fairly close to one another.

    surprisingly good

i didn't think much of this place, but it was surprisingly good for a franchised chain. Shrimp cocktail appetizer was fresh. Lobster bisque needs work, but was edible. 2 1/2 lobster was broiled well, and tasty. Rib eye was good too, but be sure to order a sauce on the side, because it is bland. Sides are big. Onion rings were pillowy and good, creamed spinach not so much. Overall, it really wasn't bad. I could think of a handful of shi shi celebrity chef restaurants that do worse than this franchised chain. With a drink each, and a glass of wine, bill was around $200 for two. Ambience was good and service was impeccable. The waitress finds out the patron's name from hostess and refers to him as Mr.so n so-nice touch. Also, the mini ceramic fondue style butter caddy with a candle below to melt for the lobster is a nice touch-ppl really do appreciate little things like this.

    Excellent Lamb!

I know it's a steakhouse but my god the lamb is wonderful! Just skip the jelly and have fresh mint on top just perfect. Everyone from host stand to bar all so eager to please. Portions are pretty generous. The crabtini is tastey but a little to much dressing for my taste. My husband steak was perfect temp. Will be back so much fun. Not cheap but if your looking to save money stay at home!

    Waste of Money

had to wait 45 mins for the food to come out... with one of the orders came out extremely raw... manager came out and told us we'd get a free dessert, but they charged for it anyway... I always get the porterhouse for 2 when I go to any prime steakhouse.. but this one was subpar. if you're going to drop 80 bucks on steak, why would you go here?

Wow .. that was not good

I'm not sure where to start. I was so disappointed by this place. Not only did the shrimp taste very low quality and likely frozen, the "lump crab meat" tasted like it came straight from a can. The service wasn't much better incredibly aloof to the point of being somewhat rude. I asked for my water glass to be filled twice, and we were completely done with dessert before the coffee even came out. The decor wasn't much better.
