Well! We finally made it to this spot after figuring out that they are open for lunch! We were headed to a table in the back when we got a look at the hot red-headed bartender and changed our minds! We requested to eat at the bar instead and she did not disappoint us. Great service, great attitude, and great margaritas! We will definitely be back.

So -- I've been here a few times as it is around the corner from my apt. It keeps getting better....but there are definitely flaws. This review is not meant to be negative but the tab ($) is fierce... and so is my opinion. St. Louis Ribs - Pretty good, meaty, but I had expected better. Overpriced. Not championship 'cue as advertised. Deep Fried Ribs - Interesting, not great, but worth the try. Sausage - Ordered the platter, they lumped all of the sausages together (3 dif kinds in slices) and the waiter could not tell us which was which, disappointing. However, they did have a kick and I liked this the best. Brisket- only had a small piece, but I thought it was dry and lacking flavor besides smoke. Slaw - Both slaws are tasty, really good ...but $7/decent sized order? It's cole slaw. Chix Sandwich - Dry and Flavorless. Pulled Pork Sandwich - Dry, Smoky, and saltless.

I went at about 6:30 with two friends on a Sunday. We thought that the food was exceptional. Also, the portions are very large. The burnt ends and baked beans were really delicious, and the pulled pork, regular brisket and the other sides were also great. The meat certainly wasn't dry like some other reviewers claimed- it was quite tender and full of flavor. We've heard that the BBQ has cooked for the optimal amount of time at around 6:30, maybe those other reviewers went much later in the evening. I found that the servers were quick and friendly. I'll be back to RUB often- I like Dinosaur and Blue Smoke, but RUB is already a step above them. The only thing about RUB that I didn't like was that they have only one kind of barbeque sauce- they should have some Carolina-style vinegar based sauces too rather than just one tomato-based sauce.

I'll keep this brief - who wants to hear some guy rant about BBQ anyway. The food here is really good, and I've eaten BBQ at practically every notable place in the US. Avoid the brisket, it has no flavor and will be disappointing to brisket fans. The BBQ pastrami is awesome, something almost never found on BBQ menus. The sides are all very good, with the beans and the mayo based slaw taking the cake. The service however is poor. The waiter we had was slow and didn't listen very carefully. When we asked him why everybody around us got served and we still had an empty table, he didn't seem to care and disappeared for 15 minutes. The worst part was our drinks. We ordered 2 mixed drinks, and got one - a whopping 25 minutes later. With empty tables all around us, there's no excuse for a half hour cocktail. When confronted about this the waiter got angry and defensive. I called the manager over who was even more defensive. Manager refused to comp our drink, standard procedure in practically every other NYC restaurant. We left no tip at all, which was generous.

Ate at RUB over the weekend with a friend - I won't go back. We were only a party of two and large parties of 5 and 6 next to us, seated after us, were served well before us. We asked our waiter why and he had no answer. They were already out of rib tips at 8pm, so instead we got the 3 meat platter, with great sausage, acceptable pastrami and poor brisket - dry and flavorless. We ordered a second round of drinks, it took them 1/2 hr (by then many tables were empty) and he only brought us one! The waiter's excuse was that he didn't hear us order two, but then never brought the second one. When we spoke to the manager she wasn't apologetic and definitely didn't try to make it up to us. Finally, for me cornbread and mac and cheese are BBQ musts - and RUB has neither, so I will not be going back.
Ate at RUB on 5/17/05, and the food was great. They were out of a few things already (was a little before 7:30pm), but had everything we wanted. Service was great--very friendly and accommodating server. However, the drinks were a bit on the poor side. $6 for a plastic cup of tepid beer, and the margarita ($7) and bourbon sidecar ($9) were both light on the alcohol, heavy on the sour mix. Spoke to the manager, and instead of offering to take it off our bill or to make us better drinks (just the cocktails; the beer was acceptable), she repeatedly said, "Oh, wow. Yeah, I'll talk to the bartender." So, overall, we were not at all pleased with the manager. The first thing she asked was "What's wrong?" not "How are you doing?" Guess we should have known she was not going to make an effort. Go to RUB for great bbq, but if you want a cocktail, have one beforehand.

Food was really good and not too saucy. Service was a little slow, but probably because the place was packed. A nice alternative to Virgils bbq.
