RUB - Righteous Urban BBQ
Posted by billy bob on 09/18/2005
I saw this place and had to give it a go, the only problem is that they get Really busy. Anyway i finally got there and it was Very Good. I had a three meat combo with two sides (beans and strings). The ribs and burnt ends were so darn good and the beans the best i've ever had. I saw some complaints from other reviewers but i don't think they get what authentic bbq is. Anyway i'll be back :)

Yet another NYC bbq disappointment. I am always looking for decent barbecue in NYC, so I was excited to find out there is a relatively new place right in my neighborhood. Naturally it turns out the they served overpriced, dry ribs and cold sausage. So-so sauce served on the side. The search continues ...

The prices were almost as much as a fancy restaurant, and the food was dry and flavorless. The pulled pork was bland, the ribs were tough, and the brisket was dry. The potato salad was watery. I have never been served Wonder Bread while being charged ten dollars for a drink. The only thing tasty were the onion strings.

I had the beef brisket and it was mighty tasty! The wings were perfect too. I highly recommend the onion strings as a side. And for your thirst, they have FREE COKE REFILLS! Now where else in NYC do you get that, other than fast food? It took a while to seat our party (group of 6), the atmosphere is a little drab, and the meal was a little pricey. However, wonderful food. Try the fried oreos for dessert. They aren't as bad/greasy as they sound.

I hadn't heard of this place, but a friend had read a review somewhere (probably Time Out) so he and I went with my sister. She ordered the Three-Meat platter thinking it would be a little of each... but it was about a half-pound of each! Way to much to finish in one sitting. My friend and I ordered ribs, which can be ordered in half rack( 6 or 7 ribs) or whole rack(13). The half racks are broken into two categories: Long Side (meatier ribs) and short side (more tender ribs). The best part of the ribs is that they aren't slathered with some messy sweet sticky sauce. They are nicely smoked with a zesty dry rub. Yet the meat is not at all dry. Sides include some of the best fries I have ever had, greens, onion strings (yes, strings), potato salad, and two types of cole slaw (regular and a vinegar-based version). They also have a nice selection of tap beers (including Turbodog. Yeah!) Another reviewer mentioned the service, but we thought it was excellent. It's a bit pricey, but well worth the investment!

I recently took the time to visit RUB. A friend of mine worked there and he raved about the beef. Long as dummy, i forget and i order the baby back ribs. HAHA,,,,they were scrumptous. My assosicate ordered the pastrami sandwich which she also raved about. she was suprised that the food was great. The only thing that i didn't like was their lack of staff. For a jam packed restaurant, i think two waitresses is unacceptable. It took me 15 minutes to get a drink refill and they diid not even notice that i ran out of drinks. I had to ask for my check twice and it took them 20 mins to take it. I had to wait another 15mins for my change. Great food, slow service..hire more people and get that together.

Evidently RUB is a fairly new BBQ place. Myself and 2 friends ate there for dinner. I had the rack of ribs, they were good, not great, but good. My friends had the brisket , which wasnt so good, and the pulled pork which although i didnt taste, was told it was good. Only one type of BBQ sause was available, there should be more flavors of sause. The service was nice enough, could have been a bit more attentive since the place was almost empty at 10:30pm on a saturday nite. I have had much better pulled pork and brisket at Duke's (19th street & Park ave) but went to RUB because it was right across the street from my friend apartment and we wanted to give it a try. I might eat there again , if only because its a short walk. Nothing to rave about.
