First and Last Visit
I went to Rosa Mexicano last night and I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. First of all, they were fairly annoyed at seating our party until our fifth arrived, even though there was a valid reason for her being late. The restaurant is spacious and has some interesting installations. But there were more tourists than i felt like dealing with- but that might have been due to it being the first day of restaurant week. (More on that later) Our waitress was friendly and accommodating- but clearly had more tables than she had anticipated. The guacamole was good, but not as good as everyone says. We ordered from the restaurant week menu- only to find out )15 minutes after placing our order) that we had been given the lunch menu and two of us would have to change our entree. Then twenty minutes after that the manager came over to say that they had run out of salmon- which meant the rest of our party had to change their entree. The mea culpa was a red snapper that wasn't de-boned properly and neither of my friends enjoyed. As opposed to the meal I initially wanted I got an over-spiced skirt steak stew. The food took forever as well, and was only OK. I thought offering to buy us a round of drinks wasn't out of the question, considering that four out of five members of our party had to change their dinner order, thirty minutes after the order was taken. The dessert was easily the best part. The chocolate souffle and coconut flan were out of this world. Overall, it wasn't worth the money- especially when we were nice enough to switch everyone's dinner without making a fuss.

Good for drinks and appetizers
I went into Rosa for a drink and some appetizers before a movie. The guacamole is good, but not the best in the city, and the crab-meat empanadas are great. The classic margaritas are strong, but pricey. The decor here is a big much, but fun to look at. This place is great for a large group dinner that might get rowdy.

Very disappointed
I agree with the last poster. I had high expectations for Rosa Mexicano and they were completely ruined after I visited their 18th St location. The decor was very chain restaurant and the food was not inventive and didn't warrant the high prices. The guac was tasty and the service was nice, but generic. Very disappointed.

terrible!
this place reminded me of a times square chain restaurant. the decor was ok, but cheesy and the food was super overpriced and not good. i had the salmon and guacamole and it was literally inedible. total waste of money.

excellent food and service
We recently went to the rosa mexicano in union square with our 3 year old nephew. food, as expected was great, the service was commendable and the ambience was really good. we usually go frequently to the lincoln center rosa mexicano but the backrooom at the union square location was very pretty. definitely one of the best atypical mexican restaurants in the city, if not the best. they were very accommodating for a special "menu" and "anniversary special" we did for my sister and brother-in-law a few years ago. Well worth the price and the occasional wait!

nothing but good things to say!
Putting Chipotle and Rosa in the same sentence is ridiculous. Anyone who knows real Mexican food appreciates the high quality and pseudo-authentic flavors Rosa has to offer. I have many friends born and raised in Mexico City who can vouch for the variations on authentic dishes offered here. This is a great place for New Yorkers as well as anyone who wants great food. If you think that Taco Bell and Chipotle serve real authentic Mexican foods, then you may have a hard time appreciating Rosa's menu. This is an expensive restaurant, but you get what you pay for. Some quick things to try are the pomegranate margarita or michelada, guacamole, queso fundido, tortilla soup, and the arrachera con camarones for starters. Eating out once a week all over the city (including visits to Chipotle) qualifies my review. This place is a favorite for me and many of my friends. The atmosphere is hip and fun although the service is hit or miss.
