Brilliant, as in bright flavor, modern Mexican

This is a never-fail restaurant. I can take friends and clients for the always impressive dinner hour or - my favorite - brunch at a table in the sidewalk cafe. The soups - especially the posole and the cauliflower - are why we have taste buds! The bartenders know exactly what makes a great cocktail; the waiters are personable without being intrusive; the hosts welcoming without being fake. If you think of Mexican food only in terms of burritos and enchiladas, treat yourself to anything with Niman ranch pork here. And if you're a fan of tres leches, this version is the best in the city!

    Best Creative Mexican in NYC

I've been coming here for years. Always reliable and creative mexican fare. It's not the greasy tex-mex that most other places peddle - this place is authentic with fresh ingredients. Be adventurous - don't just choose the enchiladas (although they are great also!). I always have the fish dishes. The striped bass is great and the current cod special is fantastic - note to management: please put it on the regular menu!! Note that you need to expect a high energy/noise level on busy nights but I think that give it a great NY atmosphere. Mid-week is a quieter if you want a more intimate date.

    Warm, friendly and delicious

Just had my engagement party there last night. It was attended by 31 people. Most agreed they would definitely come back. Their pulled pork is amazing and steak is soft and tender. The butternut squash is smooth with a nice kick of savory spices. I am not a regular customer here and the service was superb!! More people came than initially planned, and the waiters totally adapted, and did not break a sweat. Service with a smile!

    Rock on

Went to the Rocking Horse Cafe tonight after a friend suggested we try it out. Place isn't large but we were placed in back table that had good view of the whole restaurant and we didn't feel crowded. Told the margaritas were really good here so tried the la pina. Was good but not the best I ever had but they sure didn't skimp on the size or the alcohol content. Complimentary chips were fresh, crunchy and unlike some other places didn't have a lot of salt which I loved. Salsa served was a bit non traditional in that it was more of a thick puree blend but was still good with the chips. Asked numerous times if we wanted a refill of chips and salsa but had to turn down that temptation since we didn't want to fill up too much. For main course, my friend had the camarones con papaya. It looked good and she said it was tasty. She was also excited that they offered spelt tortillas since it seemed to be a healthier option. I had the cordero enchipotlado (chipotle braised lamb). They let me switch the side to mashed potatoes since I'm not a big fan of polenta and also ordered a side of the plantain puree since it sounded so interesting. I don't usually order lamb shank so my eyes popped out of my head at the size of it. Definitely, would have leftovers for lunch the next day and maybe even the day after. Lamb well cooked and seasoned, mashed potatoes had plenty of yummy butter. Plantain puree would have been better to me if it were a bit sweeter. Of course we couldn't leave without trying dessert because the options looked so good. My friend had the tortita de chocolate. I had the buñuelos which were fried dough with powdered sugar (reminds me of a beignet). I'm usually disappointed with desserts that I order but these buñuelos hit the spot. Warm, sweet with a bit of a crunch. They were delicious by themselves but also good with the Ibarra chocolate pot au creme which was like a chocolate mouse. Service was great here from beginning to end. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. The manager also checked on our table during each course to make sure everything was going well. Would definitely check out the Rocking Horse again.

This place really delivers!. Their drinks are well-made, try their shrimp with papaya and chocolate tortitas Sit outside and enjoy the street life. I've been going to this place for more than ten years and still enjoy the quality of their food!
