Another wine bar on the UWS (sigh). In truth, there have been about 8 that have sprung up in the last yr or yr and a half. Some have survived, some haven't (and for good reason) but The Red Frog? Well, here's to hoping it lives long and prospers on Broadway (b/n 70th and 71st). You could almost miss it, so tiny and no awning, but once you step inside, the red walls, large mirrors and gold moldings make you feel like you are abroad. Spanish, French and Portuguese melodies play. There are only about 30 seats (7 at the tiny L shaped bar) but for a seat right at the front to people watch the foot traffic on Broadway, you could not do better. There are about 5 tables and a nice corner in the back where you and 7 of your friends could snuggle in, drink some great wine, and share some of the delicious tapas style foods on the menu. I had both a red and a white wine last night (my friend too) and Mira behind the bar was precious...very knowledgeable but not over-the-top (i.e.-not a snobby bone in her body). We sat at the bar and I recommend it...the pours are very generous (a plus) and the hummus app and eggplant salad I had was really interesting and quite filling. The wine list is diverse and Mira allowed me to taste until I landed upon the red I chose (one from Portugal that was so incredibly fruity but not chewy...not overly tannic and had this smooth finish-seriously, I have to find this wine). Oh, and did I mention value? So while this place is tiny, I still want to share the good news-even if it means I won't have a seat there all the time. I want The Red Frog to succeed. Make a point to get there in the coming days. I don't think any part of the experience will leave you wanting more.
