Interesting
Very interesting take on raw food. I would say that the food was pretty tasty, but once again with the Brooklyn raw food - the portions are simply too small for the price. They are also pretty nut heavy. The atmosphere was cool and they were super nice. Not sure I would travel the hour and a half from Manhattan to go there again though. The lasagna was really good tho...

Still Great
I have been coming to RawStar since they opened and am ever happy to do so. The food is delicious and so healthy. Sometimes it is very spicy, so let them know before you order if you are sensitive to the heat of the spices. (I love 'em). Most of the recipes are unique, and the desserts are exquisite! Chef Mawul and company are comfortably informal and friendly. Every now and then, there is a young, perhaps inexperienced server, but it is nothing to sweat. The place can get cramped when five people are in the front, but that is generally not an issue for most who are taking out. I'll be back again and again.

we got charged for tap water ANDfor ice!
Okay, here's a follow up to my review, of October 20th. After my experience I wanted to try their brunch. My experience was very different on this 2nd visit. Well the good news first. The raw pancakes- incredible. It came with sliced strawberry and stawberry sauce. It was delicious, and the taste is actually, very reminiscent, of the cooked kind. And that's all the good news. They were out of a lot of the food I was interested in and their brunch menu is small to begin with! I was told on my 1st visit to come early to avoid them running out of menu items. Well we did! The service was unconcerned, uninterested, and unfriendly. I was given the wrong information on the porridge, and when questioned about it, the waitress denied doing that. Well I never would have ordered the dish as such if the information was accurate. The porridge did not taste good anyway. The service was so inexplicably unfriendly and unservicable, that believe it or not, I was not that surprised when we were charged for ice AND for tap water!! It seemed very consistent.

Delicious! Unique! Great Value!
I just moved to Prospect Heights and wanted to check out some of the vegan/vegetarian places in the hood. Rawstar stuck out as the most interesting, so I checked it out. Wow, amazingly delicious. I am not usually a big tempeh person, but the curry tempeh was excellent. Then I loved the bok choy and the pear and kale salad was nice too. Prices are very reasonable, my entire dinner was $11. The place is a bit small, but it's cozy and could be a date place. The only real negative was that the service was slow, but the guy was by himself and there were a good amount of people.

Excellent Place!
This was the most affordable raw food I've ever seen! The most expensive entree on the menu was $13, and came with a side. Most of the entrees come with your choice of side and salad. Blake and I ordered the falafel with cashew sauce and the spinach cheese puffs for appetizers. They were both served on a bed of marinated curly kale and they were both delicious. For an entree, I had the lasagna with a side of curry plaintains. Blake had the curry 'tempeh' with wild rice and kale pear salad. All of the sides came complimentary with the entrees. Blakes faux tempeh came drizzled in a brown sauce, and had a wonderful, complex flavor. My lasagna and plaintains were very different from anything I've ever tasted, and I decided I liked them both. For dessert, we took home a piece of tropical paradise pie, which had a nice, smooth texture that reminded me of pumpkin pie. The crust of the pie was very nice also. The restaurant atmosphere felt very authentically Caribbean, right down to the music. The place was small and intimate, and the ordering counter had bamboo siding and a grass hut overhang. The staff was nice.

affordable raw
Cute place. Their website is not up but the menu here is accurate. They had most, but not all food on the menu, when we went on a Saturday evening. This place is hit and miss with the food but is quality. The spinach cheese puff appetizer was pretty good but the spinach pie and hummus was not. The spinach pie somehow looked and tasted burnt, and both the pie and the hummus, lacked in flavor. There was an inconsistency in the spicy ginger sauce. One time it came out good although not spicy or gingery at all. The other time it was sour- yuck. The chipotle hand roll was okay. I've had better. If you are considering a salad, mixed greens come, with almost everything. Hold onto you hats with the curry almond soup. You must really like curry. The flavor is very strong, bold, and intense. A blended soup with small squares of zucchini and a little olive oil drizzled on top. A coconut water works to wash this down. It was fresh and hydrating. The flaxseed crackers and cashew cheese were good. This is a very enjoyable flaxseed cracker and the cashew cheese was a nice dip. The side of curried plaintans are delicious. Sliced thin, light on the curry, flavorful, and just sweet enough. I would eat this for dessert or breakfast by itself etc. The paradise pie is recommended. Not too sweet it has fresh fruit and a vegan whip. The staff was very nice. Brunch has a fantastic menu and I will be trying it soon. For some reason Rawstar is not entirely equiped for take out, so bring your own solo cups, for side sauces.

The Best!
The food here is sooooo good and really affordable. The service can be questionable and the atmosphere is a little funky but who cares with food like that at such a great price. Highly Highly recommended. I love this place!
