Rare Bar & Grill

Pretty clubby, but understated, unpretentious place. The moment we sat at the bar and waited for our table, every one was friendly and inviting. The service was terrific. The onion rings so far were absolutely the best! And read about the sweet potato fries with the honey maple dipping sauce. Did not disappoint! And one of the best, somewhat reasonably priced burgers in the city.

My three friends and I ate at Rare recently and really enjoyed the experience. There was a little confusion with needing to leave credit card at the bar while enjoying a few free meal cocktails, which we all thought was aggressive, but once we sat down the service was pretty decent. Especially the hostess who had 4 visible tattoos that had me constantly asking myself if they were cool or too weird. After a few Corona's I concluded they were okay. As for dinner, my one buddy, Glad, as we call him because he gathers food like a trash bag, ordered the Bison Burger with a fried egg on top. After he belched "A-W-E-S-O-M-E" we agreed that he was happy with the marriage of these two distinct proteins. My two other buddies had the M &M burger. My friend Mike's said his was so good that he went home and dreamed about it. No need to go into further detail I had the Rare Classic, saving the others the menu for future conquests. A return is definately in order. (Note: Please hold off on references to the name when kidding around with friends that you haven't seen in a few months i.e. "It's RARE that we get to do this anymore,"or "Boy I'm RARE-N to drink some beers," etc. They will be met with frowns from the staff.)

I live right up the block from rare for two years now and I absolutely LOVE it. The burgers are the best in the area and the sweet potato fries with honey dipping sauce is yummy. Somebody mentioned soda driving the up the bill? Funny- the soda has been free refills for as long as I can remember. If you want a cheap meal go to a fast-food joint...My favorite burger is the M&M burger, and the best part of all is the PICKLES! They use the famous downtown pickles from GUS (the full sours). I swear all this talk is making me hungry. The service is not all that but these days it seems the waitstaff has progressivly gotten ruder, and lazier everywhere. Thursday nights it's mobbed and there is a twenty minute or longer wait. I find the bartenders to be arrogant as well.

We use to there weekly when we opened our midtown offices. The more regularly we eat there the ruder the staff would be. The final straw was when five of us in suits were seated at a 3 top table to make room for two people that split a burger and a glass of water. Seems they are not able to hold staff members for more then a week so they are always ?training.? Also, they started using cheap ingredients and less of them.

The burgers here are tasty, sizeable, and unique. I love the chicken burger, mexican, classic, the burger cesar salad, and pretty much everything I've tried. My only caveat is drinks - alcoholic or otherwise really inflate the bill, and unless you get the classic, you will pay a lot for that burger. Classic's about $8, others go as high as $18

Consistent burgers and fries, but always a little something from management's attitude and weird rules. Difficult to make substitutions, a bbq sauce request was denied and soda refill's can make a hamburger an expensive meal.

I have eaten at Rare many times now. Most of the time when I leave I comment that it is the best burger I have ever had. The other times I leave a little disappointed but I keep going back because they have the potential. Oh and the sweet potato fries with the maple dipping sauce is great. Service can be slow but well worth it and the pickles are also tasty.
