I'm lactose intolerant and simply wrote that under the comment section of the last item I ordered and they completely accommodated me. The food came fast and was delicious. Good job Raj Mahal I am thinking of ordering the banana fritters again for breakfast, with a side of maple syrup.

We used to come here and bring friends and family because we loved the live sitar and the food was acceptable, even good, most of the time. But our last experience was torturous. They started to BLAST a gimmicky Happy Birthday medley that ended with a very obnoxious rendition of Old McDonald had a farm every 5-10 minutes. In the hour we were dining, we had to put up with the music 4 times, each time unceremoniously cut off (rather than faded out.) This greatly impeded our conversation with a friend who was visiting from out-of-town, and was, honestly, embarrassing for the hosts. The food was bad, just barely heated up leftovers (not even hot), with no subtlety of flavors. The complimentary Mango Pudding (just a weak jelly with coloring, no mango taste whatsoever) was shoved in front of us and we were too polite to decline. All in all, we felt attacked rather than served in this dining experience, so the tip was at 18% - and the waiter actually COMPLAINED about the tip, and asked for more! I am sad that our relationship with the Raj had to end this way. They have lost all the business they would have got from us and our friends - in one fell swoop.

Who ever wrote that they hated the place does not live in OUR neighborhood. The food is great there and the lunch special is very filling and not at all pricey. The food is authentic Indian food not that processed made for tourists Indian food.

I absolutely LOVE Indian food, so it has to be pretty awful for me to write a bad review, espcially given the price which was very reasonable. If you're looking for an Indian place on 6th St. do yourself a favor & go anywhere on the block between 1st and 2nd Aves. than this dive. Located almost in the basement, I should have known from the musty smell to get up and leave. Sadly, my husband insisted we give it a try, to his regret. The place was dirty and so were the serving plates and the servers. One waiter coughed & sneezed & I didn't notice any hand-washing. The food was not as good as a frozen Indian entree from the supermarket. At least with the frozen entree you kow you're not going to get sick. Nearly everything was warm & re-heated. The server lacked any enthusiasm & was a complete amateur. I wouldn't hire this guy to work for my backyard barbecue! The dessert was this orange slimey stuff that we just left without touching, except to see if it was made out of plastic. I am really sorry we wasted our trip to the City with such a lousy diniing experience. Hope you learn from our mistake.

First time ordered home delivery. Was at least a mile away and food arrived in good time and still hot. Best Indian food we have had in NYC, fair prices, fresh, and good portions. Highly recommended, we'll be ordering again and visiting in person.

My wife has been taking our daughters here for several years for a girls night out. Last year was my first time and I was blown away! The food was deliscious, the service was warm and friendly and the value can't be beat. It's my birthday and we're making a special trip from western NJ for my birthday dinner.

This is one of the most pleasant dining experiences I've had in manhattan, where I usually end up feeling ripped off and annoyed. The atmosphere was really pleasant-they had live music and cute decor. The service was so attentive and welcoming, a real pleasure. The prices were ridiculously reasonable, the food was delicious (although if you like spicy indian, ask for extra spice), and they gave us free mango ice cream for dessert. I will definitely be going back.
