I moved to Brooklyn from California about a month ago and was told by other Californian friends that there was no decent Mexican food in New York... So I took up their challenge and went into every mexican place I could find. Rachel's is about as close as can be gotten... it's noticeably a step down from San Diego or Santa Barbara, but it's on the right track and for New York City it's head and shoulders above the rest.

It's hard to find good Mex in NY. I'd order from this place again, but it's nothing outrageous.

I've only done takeout or delivery from this place and each time the girl that answers the phone was impolite. The food is great and so are the delivery guys but this girl's attitude needs work. Aside from that, the food is really good and the atmosphere looks inviting. Their vegetarian burrito is yummy and really big, enough for 2 people. It's good Mexican food at a pretty reasonable price.

I moved to NYC from LA and I quickly found that you really should just not look for Mexican food here. I just wanted a REAL taco, no lettuce or cheese or ground beef or deep fried shell. A real taco should just have two corn tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro. Well, anyway, I recently moved to Park Slope and found this place to be really good. Not as good as a great taqueria in LA, but as good as most. I think I like La Taqueria a little better (which is this places sister or brother or whatever you want to call it, up in North Park Slope). Anyway, a good deal (you can get the half rotisserie chicken for peanuts and it is BIG) and it is good quality.

The cute backyard eating area as well as a front window that opens onto the street make Rachel's the perfect place to go for Mexican on a nice night. The first time we went we finshed eating rather late -- around 10 -- and right as we were getting ready to leave the waiter brought around pieces of leftover flan for everyone left sitting outside. I'm definitely a regular now.

While I've only ordered delivery from Rachel's so far, I keep walking by and meaning to eat there, too, since they have this great open front area and it's nice out now. The food always seems fresh and cooked perfectly-- I'm a big fan of the surf-and-turf platter with shrimp and strip steak. They have brown rice if you want it, too! Delivery has been very prompt each time so far. Mostly, Rachel's is an EXCELLENT deal. It's really cheap for the amount of food you get and the quality. Oh, and their brunch menu looks really good, too, although I haven't tried it myself yet.

This place is great. i only gave a 3 for service becuase there is only counter service, but they were very friendly. probably family owned. HUGE burrito full of fresh ingredients, and tasty salsas to add on. nice little outdoor area to relax and enjoy your fixins, while sipping a jarrito, or a cervesa.
