Not recommended
I went to this place based on the reviews I read and i'm more than a little surprised. They overcharged for the samosas, and the lentils literally tasted like paste. For 7 bucks i'm not expecting the works but edible would be nice.

Cabbies' Gem
This is a hidden pearl. Look for an endless line of cabs parked right in front of it and there you are. The spices are extremely well balanced so you're looking at vegetarian food that is not too spicy, yet tasty. The chana masala and aloo gobi are amazing and the samosas are definitely worth trying. And both will cost you 4 dollars. Try the chai as well!

Rocks
as a vegetarian it's hard to find a cheap meal and that's why I think this place rocks. I got a small bowl of rice with two veggie options on top (one delicious tofu curry and another eggplant potato one) for 3 bucks and a veg samosa for $1 anywhere you can get a yummy filling vegetarian meal for under 5 bucks deserves a good review from moi so who cares it's a mom-n-pop hole in the wall where u have to stand if you want to stay... it's cheap and good!

cheap but cheerful
This is hands down the best place to go in the east village if you're broke for a delicious snack. The food is actually a lot better than many actual restaurants and the number of taxicabs that lurk outside attest to that.
