    Perfect Prune

    A perfect meal. We arrived at 6:15pm on a Sunday night (no res's that night), my sis, dad, and I. An impromptu family dinner that was flawless. We all love to cook and indeed some of the things on the menu, thus could appreciate the skill and labor that went into this wonderful dinner. Had the marrow bones, quail, sweetbreads, calvados omelette and hors'd's... the service was lovely and warm, as was the restaurant. We lingered over bottles of wine as dad delighted us with stories about traveling to Paris when Paris was Paris.... Memorable, delicious, and worth every cent.

    Delicious Brunch

    The banana bread was quite tasty, but the steak and eggs were Out Of This World. Try them. They were absolutely fantastic! The place is quite cute and very small so get there early unless you want a long wait,

    Pleasant Experience

    I had dinner here last night with my husband and his mother. I was a little put off after reading most of the negative reviews posted here. However, I had a great experience and a great dinner there. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We had the fried oysters, monkfish liver, marrow bones, the sweetbreads, lamb sausages, grilled fish, and a bottle of cava to share. We all really enjoyed the oysters, the liver , and the sweetbreads. The oysters were bluepoints which were sweet and juicy when you bit into them. The marrow bones were average mainly due to the reddish hue of the marrow once they were free of the bones and plopped onto the bread. I've had marrow bones at St.John's in London, and they were different in color and texture. However, the parsley salad that accompanied the bones was a bright contrast that cut the rich fat taste of the marrow very effectively. The lamb sausages were nice, but average, lacking some seasoning to round out the flavors. The grilled fish was not overdone, retained a slight sweetness of the flesh, but was a tiny bit fishy tasting, but not very noticeable, so able to be overlooked. We ended the very enjoyable meal with espressos. All in all, we thought it was a very pleasant experience, I think in part because we got there early so the whole place was practically empty and had time and space to enjoy our meal without the noise and bustle of the crowd that started to trickle in at 7:30 or so.

    Meh

    Had dinner with a friend. I knew the restaurant was famous for off the hook combinations "chefs" love, but this did not prepare me (an adventurous eater) for the meal. That's not to say it was bad...just..well...off I guess. As I waited for my friend and sipped a drink I saw the bone marrow starter delivered several times. I knew that was not for me. The bones were big - I suppose the marrow was therefore generous, but it looked odd delivered with a rough, non absorbent bread. Bones and dry bread. But to be fair I did not taste. Our server was pleasant, the atmosphere was cute, but the food - monk fish liver (with the same scrapy bread), fried oysters (2 to a bundle, crispy, but a little dry, and not oysterlicious particularly) and radishes with butter and salt were an offbeat, and one time only kind of start. Entrees proved a similar experience. I ordered pork stew with salsa verde - which was NOT tamatillos and peppers. They coined that name to describe an herb garnish which served to add a little flavor, but make he stew, spare in appearance, seem dry. My dates mussel entree, simple and delicious in description, was a bit oily and, unlike every other mussel preparation I have had. It did not lend itself to dipping with the aformentioned scrapy bread. and had a a slick od oil in the bowl. Desserts were pedestrian, and the butter cake was served in a white dish (think thrown in a cereal bowl) and seemed oddly like a croissant. Coffee, which was charged by the refill, did not leave me impressed after the meal. Meh.

    Disappointed

    After being turned away from this very popular, very small restaurant several times, I finally had the forethought to make a reservation for dinner at Prune. While I sincerely appreciate the creativity of the menu items, I just didn't care for the food. I ordered the Roasted, Rolled and Stuffed Loin of Lamb. To my horror, I was presented with a slice of roasted fat. I am not exaggerating when I say that I could not find any meat in this slab of gristle. It was truely the most unappetizing item I've ever been served in a restaurant. It was so bad, I really don't know what they were thinking. When the waiter came over to check on us, I simply asked him if this dish is normaly so fatty, and without a moment's hesitation, he said "You know, a lot of people say that about that dish, may I bring you something else?". He recommended the Stewed Pork Shoulder with Salsa Verde (partially, I suppose, because it's a dish that stews all day and doesn't have to be prepared from scratch- hence a quick delivery- nice touch), which I accepted. I didn't like that one either. The pork was cooked to perfection, but the combination of herb and spices was just plain weird. I actually hated it. However, I really appreciated the way the waiter handled my dissatisfaction with my dish. I really didn't want to send the food back (I never do that), but he handled it in such a way that I didn't feel like I was being a grumpy customer. That goes a long way. My wife had the Whole Grilled Bronzino with Fennel Oil, which was excellent. Our Fried Oysters and Mojitos from the bar menu were also excellent. This is a charming little restaurant, but I just really hated my food. I was very impressed by the responsiveness of the waiter, so maybe I'll return, but probably only to try the lunch burger.

    Amazing! Just love it!

    This is a wonderful lovely restaurant. One of the tastiest in the city, and a great wonderful space, especially for dinner. Invite your friends and they will be so impressed about your "find." Gabrielle is an amazingly talented chef. And she actually cooks in her own restaurant a rarity these days of "celebrity" chefs. I have been coming for years, and it has never faltered. Great marrow bones I am an addict. Get them with a bitter greens salad, it's a perfect combination. And great steak. Freshest produce. And the staff is just the nicest and sweetest. Always.

    What A Shame

    I had a friend in from out of town who is vegetarian. She wanted the egg, cheese, and bacon sandwich without the bacon but...she had the NERVE to ask that tomatoes be added instead. While our smug server was willing to have the sandwich made without the meat, we were curtly told "NO" when we asked for the tomato addition. I was a little taken aback, but still thought that this could be easily remedied. I asked if they had any sliced tomato around for a salad and offered to pay for them... "NO" again. I asked that our server please make the request with the chef and she laughed, left, came back, and just said, "NO" again. I asked another person there who appeared to be in a managerial role, what we could do about this. Surely there was a tomato on the premises. This person told me that and I quote: "We have a 'vision' here, and that vision is that the egg sandwich be made without tomato.... I guess though, that the "vision" does allow for bacon to be removed. Now, I live in NY (actually, only a few blocks from PRUNE), and I understand the need for each NY restaurant to have it's own "niche." Hell... I've eaten at Peter Luger's where rude wait staff is part of the show. I get it... I even dig it. But Prune is no Peter Luger's, and this was not that. These people were rude, obnoxious, and placed absolutely zero value on our patronage!
