Primehouse New York (CLOSED)

I came here for an impomptu birthday brunch with my husband, and it was fantastic. The service was excellent. The hostess was very nice, and our waitress was phenomenal - so sweet and helpful. At the end of the meal, when we paid and she found out it there was a birthday, she asked us not to leave yet and then brought out two mini creme brûlées, which were excellent. The brunch menu is a great deal - we ordered a burger and a crab cake sandwich, both of which were huge and came with a mimosa and tea/coffee and a delicious bread basket, all for about $50. We'll be back!

We came with a group of 4 to celebrate a friend's birthday on 1/27/12. What better way to start off the night than by celebrating with a round of drinks, but who knew getting a drink at Primehouse would be so difficult! The waitress asked us to provide our identification when we first sat down, fine. However, subsequently and throughout the entirety of the night, every person at the table was asked to show I.D on at least 3 separate occasions. Suffice it to say, this was not only an annoyance but a total buzz kill, as we rummaged through our purses and wallets each time. Worried about how the rest of the night would pan out, we ordered our food and waited patiently. We were hungry as we never received a bread basket (even though we asked for one). Fast forward to the steaks... Only 1 out of the 4 steaks were actually cooked correctly. That, to me, sounds like a pretty bad ratio, one especially for a resto touted as a highly rated steakhouse. Instead of med/rare we all received medium. We called the waitress over and explained as convivially as we could, but she grimaced and said she would talk to "someone" first. A few minutes later she re-appeared and took back our food, albeit, devoid of any apologetic tone/facade. We finally get our steaks back and now 2 out of the 3 come out ice cold in the middle, rare and un-edible. At this point, all of us have either lost our appetites or just truly disappointed with not only the sub-par service but the restaurant as a whole- and worse off, now there gapes a big fat hole in our pockets, where we could've spent our money elsewhere. A great restaurant experience could be defined as either having great food or great service and if lucky, both, in equal measure. However, In this case, Primehouse managed to fail both criteria, miserably. I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants to have fun time or a satisfying meal because 4 out of 1 times, they will disappoint.

This restaurant did me a dis-service last night. I have eaten there in the past and thought it was good. I returned to try the rest/week special. It was a complete joke and was actually insulting. Don't participate in restaurant week unless you can offer food on par with your regular menu! The sirloin offered was beyond tough and i struggled to cut it. The carrot cake was a quarter of an inch thick - my friend and I were cracking up. No one is saying they should offer the porterhouse for restaurant week, but certainly food that is in line with the quality they serve regularly. Because of this, I will not return even though I liked this spot. It was the poorest special i have ever had..and $35 wasted. The street vendor down the block serves better quality steak! Surprised that they haven't figured out that restaurant week gives you an opportunity to get returning customers if you get it right. Prime clearly doesn't see it that way...my friend who lives down the block and was visiting Prime for the first time won't be returning either. Sad.

Sitting there with three chefs and the owner of a specialty meat processing plant that dry ages it's own beef we feel we were duped! 65 day dry aged beef should not be this tough and flavorless. A sommelier that has "gone home" by 9 pm on a Friday Night. A useless server. We chose Primehouse because none of us had tried 65 day dry aged steak. Utter waste of our time. The only thing prime at this place is the name of the bull who sired the meat.

Brunch at Primehouse was a pleasant surprise. We were warmly welcomed by our server, who set the tone for the restaurant. The brunch/lunch menu was diverse and delicious...something for everyone. Upon leaving, we were thanked by the manager. The ambience is tasteful (including the music which is just at the right decibel). You can hear yourself talk..but not everyone surrounding you. Can't wait to return and definitely will bring friends and recommend to others.

I've been to Primehouse several times for lunch and dinner and I am never disappointed with their food. There is nothing on their menu that I won't eat and haven't eaten. Their cocktails are pretty good too. The service could be a little better. Its not bad service but for the status of the restaurant you would expect them to be more than average. The price is expensive but I have not problem paying the price for great food in a restaurant with great decor and decent service in New York. Thats not a common combination in this city.

My husband took me here for my birthday dinner on 4/17/2010. We found our waiter to be unfriendly, and a bit rude. He acted as if he couldn't be bothered answering our questions, as if his job was so much more important than anything else that was going on in the world. The steak was just okay - I've had MUCH better. It was cooked fine, but lacked that wonderful flavor/seasoning that I've had at other quality steakhouses. The sides were wonderful - polenta w/ parm, and mac n' cheese were just wonderful, and sort of "saved" the feeling that this was a waste of a lot of money spent on a birthday dinner. Overall - I wouldn't go back here. There are MUCH better steakhouses, w/ better service and better quality meat.
