great steak in a subpar operation

The operation of this restaurant is disappointing. Waiters cannot be contacted even though they are all over. Steak was served on a cold plate. Bread was cold, right out of the refrigerator. My steak ordered medium rare was served rare. HOWEVER. The quality of the steak, at least my Angus rib, was superb, better than at Wolfgang's, Quality Meat, or Gallagher. Since that is what I went there for, everything else is forgiven.

    A Superior Steakhouse Experience

As a native New Yorker, I learned early to view steakhouse dining as a competitive sport. A recent New Year's Eve dinner at Porter House convinced my girlfriend and me that a steakhouse can also be a fine restaurant, albeit an expensive one. The bar was comfortable and even on this busy night service was professional and relaxed. The wine steward was knowledgable and gracious: his recommendation for a California cab was right on target for our tastes and price. Our assorted shellfish appetizer was fresh, tasty and nicely presented. The strip and filet steaks were deliciously seasoned, toothsome and a perfect medium rare. Side orders of truffled mashed potatoes and roasted brussels sprouts were excellent. Service was superior. Overall, our experience was more characteristic of a fine dining room than many of the high-end New York steak houses, where dinner often lasts 50-60 minutes. I would recommend this restaurant highly and plan on dining here again.

    Totally Delicious - Coming Back

The wine was great and steak was incredible. We had the Skirt and the Hanger--get the homemade bbq sauce and hash browns too. Cocktails were unique and tasty and the bill wasn't so bad. Oh, don't leave without getting the ice cream sundae "kit."

All around awesome place to eat

I took my parents for their anniversary in May and I could not have been happier with the way it turned out. While obviously pricey, our waitress was very helpful with recommendations and never seemed to be far away when we needed her. The filet on a bone was something I had never seen before, it was delicious, and so were the 4 different sauces you could get with it. I finished it off with an ice cream sundae which was amazing...I was inspired David Boreanz's son who was eating it at the table next to us. I've never written a review on this site before but with a 3.5 star rating I felt compelled to improve it. If you are going to Porterhouse, going in knowing it will cost a lot, but it will be well worth it...and get the ice cream sundae! :)

    ok...

My wife and I went here for our 9 year wedding anniversary. There are a million restaurants in NYC that you can go to for an expensive meal, this is one of them. Unfortunately, I can't say it was worth the price. It was nice enough inside, dim lighting, waiters and hosts well dressed, but it was a fairly dull and uninteresting experience. The night started off poorly when the flowers I ordered were not on the table when we sat down. In all fairness, this was not the restaurant's fault, rather the flower company, but after the person I told this to disappeared for 10 minutes, I had to get up and go to the front to find out what happened from somebody completely different. Then, our waiter came over. He wasn't rude or surly, but completely devoid of any personality or friendliness. There was somebody videotaping some table of VIPs, but it was right by our table, and no explanation, mention, or apology of it was made. It was killing the romantic mood we were hoping to capture. My wife ordered a filet mignon, I ordered the 2 lb lobster and linguine. Well, the food came, and the filet mignon should be called a petite mignon, it was so small. Tasted good enough, but for $40, you'd like a slightly bigger piece of meat. The lobster was actually fantastic, I was quite impressed. We ordered dessert as well, which was also quite tasty, but after an hour, we just didn't feel like the overall atmosphere and service was worth the price. It wasn't the worst service we've ever gotten, but for the prices you expect better. It just lacks any personality.

    Lives up to the name

This place is excellent. The Porterhouse is amazing. The views are great. The side of polenta and mushrooms was the best side I have ever had with Steak, and I've been to almost every steak house in the city. I believe they made this side with truffle oil. The atmosphere is also set up to where you can actually hear the people at your table. The servers could have been a little more informed about the menu.
