Since its opening, Porter House New York has been named one of the 'Best New Restaurants 2007" by John Mariani of Esquire Magazine. The 2008 Zagat Survey praises the restaurant for "meats perfectly prepared", "sides that live up to the main event" and "attentive" service "without airs". The 2008 Michelin New York City Guide claims that the menu "raises the stakes for meat lovers" and "takes the concept of a classic steakhouse and hones it with a modern edge."

    Great, but expensive

The steak, sides, apps, and the service are all great. The atmosphere seems business like, and the view, if you get a table at the window is great. But be warned, this place is expensive. Even comparing it to other NYC steakhouses, its pricey. The markup on their wines in huge and the $50 corkage fee that they now charge is a giant finger to any wine collector wishing to bring their own. I go here about twice a year, because it is ultra convenient for shows at the Time Warner Center. But if it wasn't for that, my visits would be few and far between. Dinner for two, which included one entree steak, two side dishes, one app, two cocktails, corkage fee, one cheese course and some cookies, w/ tax and tip came to over $240.

    Not worth the price

This was one of the poorest steak dinners I've eaten. Embarrassing because we were taken by out of town guests who wanted a wonderful meal. The meat had an awful off taste and the sides were mediocre at best. The broccoli rabe was barely edible. The service was slow, the waitress a bit churlish and the bread person - rude. Ordering a porter house was problematic - only available for two - so when you don't agree on how well done it should be, there's a problem. Wine was outrageously priced, this was a very disappointing meal.

    So-So

I've been to many steak houses in my life, and I have to say I wasn't as pleased with my medium rare New York Strip Steak. It was cooked to perfection but lacked proper seasoning. The mac & cheese extra for two people was to die for, amazing! The poached lobster was another great addition to the meal that was truly great. The baked clams for app. were great as well. Overall a great meal, but would have been happier with a more flavored steak... since after all, it is a steak house!

    For the Tourists

Porter House has all the makings of a great steakhouse except that it just doesn't deliver. To put it bluntly-the food is tasteless. You can see from the very touristy crowd that they are not taking any chances but has the chef ever heard of using seasoning. With all the great steak houses in NYC there is absolutely no reason to go here which is a shame because the restuarant commands an amazing view of Columbus Circle and is one of the few steak joints in that part of town. I could go through specific dishes but the bottom line is nothing stands out nor does anything completely bomb either. It is just very pedestrian. Plain and simple.

    Average food despicable service

Poorly run.  Making reservations was unnecessarily difficult.  Ok steaks but over cooked and bland.  Wine selection overpriced and poor with young vintages. Appetizers were unappetizing, side dishes not memorable, desserts average. Service was dreadful. We deserved better treatment for a large party who ordered 10k worth of wine alone. Each bottle was worth $1000.  They couldn't remember the bottles they were serving, and never bothered to clear the plates for dessert.  Several times they ignored us while we were speaking to them when we needed help. We will never return. Inexperience is tolerated, rudeness and incompetence isn't. Im a new Yorker for the past 16 years and know that there are plenty of alternatives.

    A Colossal Disappointment

What a colossal rip-off. I have been to every major New York steak house and this ranks among the bottom three. There were six of us and we ordered a porterhouse medium rare - it arrived mooing, still bloody and not at all appropriate. And compared to other porterhouses we've had at other New York steak houses, it was on the thin, not particularly marbled side. Very unsatisfactory. The hashbrowns resembled a fast food chain hash brown (not that there's anything wrong with that) just as greasy and about as tasteless, and the creamed spinach was sub-par - it had bacon cracklins which did a good job of masking the taste of the spinach, if there was taste. The appetizers were passable, nothing extraordinary or particularly memorable. At these prices this evening was a BIG disappointment. The room is handsome, and I would guess the rent exorbitant - which would account for the ridiculous prices. Our waiter was intent on selling us a 1924 Chateau Lafite Rothschild for $13,000 - apparently it's an "important" bottle of wine - it fell on deaf ears, but I give him credit for trying. This is known as an "expense account" restaurant - lots of swagger, hype and bluster, and not much substance. With all the fine steak houses in New York City, I wouldn't waste my time on this one - you will pay the same prices elsewhere and feel like you've gotten better value. I'm a native New Yorker and I dine out frequently - those are just a few of my thoughts.

    Not recommended

My steak was severely over-flamed and tasted bitter. Service was a round zero, after the order was taken impatiently by an unfriendly waiter. Other servers brought the food and we had to ask them for items like pepper and utentsils and they seemed put out by us asking. We had to take a lot of trouble to catch the waiters eye to get our check at the end and he never checked the table once. We went elsewhere for dessert. The meal was hopelesly overpriced. This funny "you are a bother to us" attitdue started from the restaurant recepetion and permeated the entire restaurant. We will never eat there again.
