Not the best Thali in town
Went here after hearing rave reviews. Checked out the North Indian and South Indian Thali. Idli was not that good and neither were the chutneys. Kheer was offered as the dessert for the North Indian thali and was nothing more than boiled milk and rice, very watery and bad. Rasam & raita were bad. Not the best in town. Service was average at best. Not going back.

Solid Food, Great Prices
Pongal is a South Indian restaurant. So don't come here expecting great North Indian food, this is not their specialty. Its only on the menu to please the ignoramuses. On the other hand, the South Indian food (mainly Dosas) is done well and prices are cheap. Try it.

Ok food...no complaints
The food here is good, but nothing special. Same menu, and the same type of curries as any other place. Not bad if you want to just try out the place.

Same curries
The atmosphere is nice however the food was not. They serve in steel plates which I found weird yet inventive. I had vegetable korma and malai kofta & asked for it to be spicy not mild. The food was mild, no hint of spiciness. The reason which I won't be returning was that both dishes tasted and looked as if they were cooked in the same tomato based masala sauce. It was as if they dumped mixed vegetables into one sauce and dumped koftas into the second. I was quite disappointed with the food and had wished I'd gone somewhere else. My friend found service rude because the waiter? came by and took our bread basket right after we took the last piece from it. My friend considered it very unprofessional to disrupt us while we were eating without asking us beforehand.

Not Worth It
This restaurant is for the uninititated. If you have had good south indian food before be prepared to be disappointed. Something as basic as an idli which is staple sound indian dish was hard as rock. The sambhar left much to be desired and the masala in the masala dosa was as bland as a spiceless vegetable.

Best Indian food I've had in NYC
I went to Pongal with my bf on a weekday afternoon last month. It was full of Indian diners (always a good sign at an Indian restaurant) and the service was very good. It was quiet and cozy and had soft Indian music playing. We had one of the huge dosas it was AMAZING! The ingredients are all super fresh. Nice romantic atmosphere, too... we're going back next week.
