Last night was my first time at Pongal. I am not a huge fan of Indian cuisine, but I will definitely be returning soon. Yes, the food took a wee bit longer to arrive than some restaurants, but that is because everything is prepared fresh. And it was all delicious. There had been a slight miscommunication between one of the people in my party and the waiter, and she got the wrong version of a dish she tried to order. They gave us the "wrong" order for free, and they brought us the "correct" order. Yes that took a little extra time. But so what? The waiter genuinely apologized, and the owner came over to apologize too. I was in a party of 4, and for $80 we were full and very happy. Reasonable prices. Caring service. And fresh cooked food. I usually find a lot of Indian food overcooked, but not here! And the place is very vegetarian-friendly. There are a lot of Indian places in this area of town, but Pongal was definitely one of the best.

We've been coming here for years. Brought family with us tonight and they loved it as much as we did. Even though there was a slight misunderstanding with my order, they left the dish and brought me the right one, Kala Chana. We'll keep coming back. Service is always good too!

Went to Pongal for lunch with a farly large group from work. The food was good, got to try new things. Found the service slow and the waiter never really asked how we were doing, refilled water glasses or anything like that. Overall would go back for lunch was tasty indian.

I have been eating Indian food and enjoying it for the last 20 years and this was one of the most disappointing experiences I have had. The food was salty, tasteless, and when we asked to exchange the Dahl which was served as a soup rather than as a chickpea dish, they told us that they don't do that there. Me and my boyfriend will never be returning there again and we will be telling our friends not to go there and experience what we did. The waiter was clueless and totally unhelpful and didn't try and please us even when we asked him to exchange a dish which we did not like.

The food was very good, much better than average, and the prices are reasonable, but our party of four agreed, service stunk. We had to gesture (we could have used a little flag) to get the waiter's attention and this was early in the evening when the restaurant was still half-empty. And we were very surprised that the tip was added in automatically! I am used to this in Europe, but not in New York City! We will go back, but I must repeat: expect good food, but don't be surprised by indifferent service.

I have eaten here twice and ordered lunch from them several times and have never had any issues with service or food quality. Everything has always been delicious and a good value and the service has always been prompt and polite. I read the negative reviews and have enjoyed my experiences here so much that I wanted to defend this place! Great place for non-meat eaters. Meat enthusiasts will not even notice they are eating a veggie meal.
