Pomaire (CLOSED)

We choose Chilean food in our visit to NY, having many different choices. I'm from Chile and I always talked to everybody about the flavor of our food , especially seafood and how I miss my country because I can't find this in USA and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the dishes in Pomaire Restaurant. Mariscal frio y Caliente was my meal and because I'm very picky with food, I started trying to find something wrong, but I couldn't, It was the opposite. Starting with a small chilean baked bread with a homemade pebre and a glass of red wine I was transported to the "mercado" in Valparaiso, then tasting the lemon and cilantro in the well cooked (on lemon) seafood ceviche, was amazing. At the final the well sazoned shellfish soup with white fish, garlic and a litlle vegetables.. delicious!! I dind't have space for dessert, but next time I'll be prepare for it, I don't want to skip the chirimoya and lucuma ice cream. Now we are thinking to go again soon and bring the family so we can try different meals, we loved Pomaire. This food and the great services made me feel close to my country.

The food was inedible, well except fir the bread. Told there was no wine list and card over charged. Subpar, too many fantastic restaurants in this city to go here.

The food at this restaurant was such a pleasant surprise. I had the cheese empanada and the hangar steak with eggs and carmelized onions - every bite melted in my mouth. My husband ate the fish chowder (the best he says he ever had) and the beef brisket. We had pisco sours, red sangria and homemade Chilean ice cream. All in all, one of the best meals we've ever had - and we have eaten at some fine restaurants around the world. The service is a bit on the slow side, but the food is well worth it

Not sure where some of the reviewers who called the food mediocre were eating. Despite the upscale vibe, this is home-style South American food, and should be judged on that basis, not against something like Bouloud or Vongerichten. The food I had was amazing. The beef empanada was as close to perfect as I've had, and the salteada was like shredded Chilean pot roast. The service is slow the way slow cooking is slow - measured, careful, worth the wait. And it's more than made up for by watching the maitre'd work the room. He is extremely personable, and knows a ton about food and wine. I'm not Chilean, so I have no idea how authentic the food really is. But I do have Chilean friends, and I plan to bring them here and find out what they think. In the meantime, I can almost guarantee I'll be back, for the atmosphere and the wine alone, never mind the delicious food. Well done.

For some reason, I wanted to like this place. Service is terrible. So slow, for no good reason. They never told us about the prix fixe menu, and considering what we paid for the meal, the mediocre quality of the food, and the poor service, paying only $25.00 a person would have taken some of the sting out. Best thing: the fried pumpkin bread. The maitre'd is charming, but that's not enough. I waited 10 minutes to have a drink order taken while waiting at the bar, we waited another 13 minutes to get drinks at the table (the place was just about empty, no surprise). The pork was dry, overspiced but still flavorless. Everything came with the same brown mushroom sauce. Much better places to go than this one.

What a treat to have a place in the theater district that is so unlike all the others. The food is excellent. We had delicious, fresh ceviche and Paila Marina, a Chilean fish and shellfish soup. It was light, brothy, flavorful - a perfect meal before the theater. The dip for the bread is a marvel of garlic, peppers and corriander. Mmmm! Selection of wine is limited but they are good. Service is very pleasant and professional. I love it!

As a Chilean, I must say that the Prix Fixe Menu is not representative of the actual food one eats in Chile. The rest of the menu is ok, but the portions of food are too small (which also differs dramatically from actual Chilean food -portions are known for being extremely generous) and extremely over-priced. The fact that they don't have sopaipillas or pebre as part of the menu also brought my attention.
