    simply the best

we have been coming here for decades, but live next to the new pjc's lincoln center. two very different restaurants! lincoln center pj's is the suburban mall/ theme park version. our dinner at the original pj clarkes last night was perfect. just know what to order--burgers/fries/cocktails/beer/bread pudding that's it, that's why you are there. we started with steamed mussels served in a cast iron pot, tons of garlic bread on the side. (12 bucks) . just perfect. next a round of cheese burgers, all ordered medium-rare, all served medium-rare. served on tiny salad plates but that is traditional. ask for lettuce and tomato and if you want it , it quickly appears. great fries. super friendly attentive waiter and bus staff who traded stories with us about being fellow irish-americans. had a corner table which was good since the juke box is very loud--but it's sinatra, joplin, beatles, ella--the atmosphere is just what you want after a long day at the office and want to have good, rather inexpensive dinner, in (for new york) a "normal" , relaxed but still highly-charged, cool restaurant environment. attractive 'suits', both male and females. we suggest you enter the back dining room through the side door, rather than the running the scrum at the third ave bar entrance, take a deep breath, and enjoy this totally unique, real new york bar burger experience. be nice to the staff and they will be nicer to you. cheers.

    Nice bar, tiny burger

Why is this place legendary? Must be for the nice bar and cool bartenders. The burger is small, comes with no fries, and is completely ordinary. Obviously not cheap but that was too be expected. Totally overrated.

    Sorry, not outstanding burgers, folks

Ah, the power of legend! People have been mindlessly ballyhooing P.J. Clarke's burgers for so many decades that who knows when they started being just ordinary -- or if they were ever anything but? The bacon cheeseburger I ordered recently was made with good quality meat, standard cheddar and regular bacon. The bun was standard issue supermarket. The burger was so undercooked (though I ordered it medium) that it was like eating mush. A good grilled burger should have a nice toothsome "crust" as a result of a very hot char, and still be pink -- but not squishy -- on the inside. Disappointing, but now I don't feel so bad having waited so long to try P.J. Clarke's "best in New York!" burger.

    Best Burger In the City?

I was in the mood for a great burger, and after reading the below commentary, I was wrongly swayed into ordering a burger from P.J. Clarks. They are like butter? Maybe the soggie bun I receceived was drenched in it. It was medicore at best; it was an average little burger that I could find anywhere in the city for half the price, and been spared the soggie bread.

Best burger in the city, hands down!

You can't go wrong getting a burger here. They are like butter. They are an institution. I wouldn't eat a burger anywhere else. And if you're crying b/c they don't put anything on it (as mentioned in another review), ask, jack. They are accommodating. Try the smothered onions or Bernaise, quite delightful.

    Delivery doesn't live up

I've ordered twice. The first time, a burger ordered medium came nearly raw. This time, the order was over an hour after promised, we were sent roasted potatoes instead of fries and a sandwich that was supposed to be on a brioche roll came on two slices of white bread. They were very polite on the phone, but it's still disappointing.

Great Food and Hidden Celebrity Hangout!

Not only is the food delicious, the staff is so nice and accomodating. I have been there many times over the past few years and more often than not I have seen a celebrity eating/drinking here! Very impressive to attract celebs on a regular basis. I recommend the Skirt Steak, Turkey Club and fries. MMMMM
