Best Baja style taco place in NYC

The food here is pretty damn good. Sure it's not the best Mexican food on the planet, but for NYC it definitely ranks as the best for baja style fish and shrimp tacos (authentically deep fried) and has a number of things you can't get at most mexican places that are considered authentic such as huevos con chorizo (properly mixed together) or with machacha (dried salty beef) which you never find anywhere else. They even have sopes (thick hand patted tortillas) which are pretty darn good. Yes, it's a little pricey and the portions are small but there are reasons for that. First, sure the cost of the food is much higher than the mexican food you can can get in a crappy bodega in Queens, or even So Cal or Baja.... well that's because the rents in Soho are much higher than Queens, So Cal or Baja. They'd have to sell a million more tacos just to break even if they charged the same prices as those other place. It's not a food truck with the luxury of no rent. If you find the same or better quality at some hidden bodega way out in the outer boroughs, then go for it, but you can't have it both ways. Plus the place is low key on purpose... ever been to Baja??? anybody? anybody? Also, the portions are authentic. Tacos are supposed to be tiny. That's how they typically come. Yes, when they come they are cheaper, and you might be able to get five of them for about $5 outside of NYC, but this is Manhattan right? You spend $20 just leaving your apartment. Organic eggs and Milk are each more that $5 at the grocery store. So stop the complaints already. I think that some reviewers have never had mexican street food before. Pinche is modeled after Ensenada (Baja CA) style street vendors, and is NOT supposed to be gourmet. If you want to have a juicy steak, go to Lugers or Wolfgangs. If you want big tacos, go to Taco Bell, mexican tacos are supposed to be bite sized. You want fancy guacamole? You don't get that at a dive style street food place like Pinche, you get it at fancy Mexican restaurants where you sit down and mariachi bands play loud music until you tip them. So anyway, I vote Pinche the best Baja style taco place in NYC, a bit pricy but reallly good mexican junk food. It's not a restaurant, it's a taco spot, so don't expect fancy margeritas, a matre d, or the guy that makes your guac fresh at the table, or a chic ambience. Show up in your flip flops, down a couple tacos (fish recoomended), down a beer and you'll be good.

    Not Recommended

This place is not authentic at all. Not only were my tacos small, they lacked the pickled onions I was looking forward to and my chicken tasted like burned chicken and my steak taco tasted like burned steak and I have no idea what their guac is made of. Taste like store bought - all you can taste hot peppers and lime. The refried pinto beans is a bowl full of oil that had very little taste. Chips were cold and i couldn't really put my finger on what the salsa was made of. I was really looking forward to this place but it was disappointing.

    Everything is good.

I work near this restaurant and I swear by Pinche on my lunch break. I bounce around between the fish taco, burrito, yuca fries, nachos, and the tamale(which they never have). I have so many options because everything is great. Every time I have visitors I take them to Pinche!

    Amazing Authentic Mexican

My masseuse told me about this place and I have been ordering religiously since. GREAT food, amazing service, fast delivery. I honestly cannot find anything wrong and being a Chef makes me a harsh critic!
