Not what I expected
I ordered the Eggs Copenhagen for a pick up. First it was more then the price listed, it was $10.95 when actually it was $16.95. I received home fries that looked a day old and not tasty, second the toast was drenched in butter. the sauce was on the side as i requested. the eggs were poached good and the salmon was medicore. I would not order from here again. I would hope maybe if you ate in the restaurant it would be different.

Pleasantly surprised
My husband & i were treated to dinner at pigalle by a good friend's parents last week. we dined on a thursday evening at 7:30p. we've lived in the neighborhood for 30 years. never dined at pigalle as we're vegan and it had no appeal. our friend's parents are elderly and chose pigalle as they were staying in the enjoined hotel on a visit. a health issue has required me to reinstate seafood into my diet, so to be exact, it was 1 vegan, 1 pescatarian & 3 omnivores. it was a lovely meal. the waiter was very attentive & patient with our special requests, the food was excellent. i ordered the mussels and the size of the order was immense for $9.95. my vegan spouse had a huge salad and several side dishes. our omnivore hosts ordered full entrees and were not disappointed. we had 2 bottles of wine that were excellent. while the restaurant was busy it was not packed and as remarked upon by a previous reviewer, not loud. perhaps because we were dining at the same time most peeps are heading to make their theatre curtain time. unfortunately i cannot comment on the final bill as i wasnt the one paying, but it was a lovely evening. i was so surprised by this neighborhood gem that i'd never tried; i cant wait to go back for more mussels. true french food lovers may have loftier standards. i had no complaint.

Disappointing
A French friend of ours recommended this place after our old favorite place didn't get an "A" rating on the NYC DOH rating system. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The appetizers were good (savory onion tart and escargot) but my entree was sub par. The monk fish was decent, but the potatoes were hard and the spinach dish was very bland. The dessert was fine, but nothing special. The place is cavernous. The best part was our friendly, attentive waiter. Overall, this place is too over-priced for what you get.

Not as Advertised on Website
We came for Sunday brunch based on the brunch menu listed on pigallenyc.com, but when we got there the waitress handed us a much more limited menu and informed us that we could also opt for the $17 breakfast buffet. The buffet was a set of steel steam table pans filled with the same type of food found in every free hotel breakfast: ham, bacon, sausage, french toast, cereal, plain scrambled eggs, plain pancakes, cereal, and a big bowl of cut honeydew and cantaloupe. Furthermore, we were told that they didn't serve Bloody Marys(creative varieties of these are a key feature of the brunch menu on their website) and that serving alcohol in New York on Sunday mornings is illegal. This is untrue, as we were able to go to Eatery and enjoy creative brunch fare and accompanying cocktails less than 30 minutes after walking out of this disappointment.

Always eat and you'll never die
I went to Pigalle when I first started working in NYC again, and was very impressed - it was a quiet, intimate spot with good food and friendly service. I went there again, on an insanely busy Wednesday night, because I had a hard time finding a place to eat with no waiting. This time, the impression was totally different. Oh, the food is still great. The crab cakes were among the best I've had, pleasantly paired with a simple but effective salad of spring greens and two kinds of fresh cherry tomatoes. The beef bourguignon was rich and nicely braised, and the chocolate mocha parfait was smooth and delicious. Got a good deal on Cotes de Provence, too, not a wine in common circulation. But the service has declined drastically. Things were very busy when I first got there, and took my waiter at least 10 minutes to notice me. He was brusque, and spoke little English. (No, he was not French.) After some people left, things improved a bit. But despite his best efforts, service lagged throughout the meal. I'm not excessively touchy about these things, so service glitches don't keep me from returning. But they do take away from the overall experience. Still, Pigalle is a nice, affordable French spot in the heart of Midtown, and a definite step up from the average hotel-affiliated restaurant. Word of caution for the first-timer - the bathroom is inside the hotel proper, and requires an access card. Ask for it at the host station.

Was ignored by staff!
Ate here on the evening of 6th April 2010 as were at a 'loose end' because our show (Jersey Boys) was cancelled. We opted for the pre-fixe dinner option which we thought was good value. Now whether it was because of this or because we were just 'annoying tourists' we felt completely ignored from the time we were seated until we left the restaurant. Whilst I couldn't fault the food at all, the service left something to be desired! Our waiter didn't even say hello or crack a smile the whole time we were there - he simply asked us what we wanted to order, took our order and away he went. Now I didn't expect him to enter into a full-scale conversation but a simple hello would have been nice. He arrived about 5 minutes later with our starters and didn't say a word, just set the plates on the table and walked away. This continued throughout the course of the meal. Noticed about 10 minutes before we left that another server was assigned to our 'area' and she seemed really nice, stopping by at the table to ask if everything was okay. We left a 15% tip instead of our usual 20% but I was kicking myself for about an hour afterwards that I didn't mention the waiter's attitude to the new server. Would also like to mention that the small guy at the front who seated you didn't even look our way as we said thank-you on our way out (I know am a bit of a wimp). Just felt completely ignored the whole time but maybe I just struck unlucky! Would also like to mention that the restroom was completely strewn with broken-up toilet paper all over the floor!

Great but avoid the crowds
I have gone to Pigalle many times and the food is always great. The service is terrific too and I think in general you get an excellent value for what you spend. My *only* quibble is that it's very popular with tourists, so it can be loud and crowded. I recommed making a reservation at Pigalle for a time when people are at the theater (8pm and later on show days). They have a very nice wine selection, and the Brunch menu has some delicious options - I love their eggs Florentine.
