    Great food with odd service

My husband and I spent a recent weekend in the city and came upon Philip Marie on a sunny spring day. The menu board had a prix fixe lunch for $8.95 which caught my husband's attention. I feared for the worst but since there was a table open on the sidewalk and I like to people watch I figured it was worth a try if I stuck to the essentials. What a surprise! I ordered the special wrap sandwich. I have high food standards and this was the best sandwich I have ever had and I am 60!. Green tortilla, rare grilled tuna, asparagus, mesclun, tomato, onion, pesto, and capers in perfect proportion to eachother. I think it was some ridiculous low price like $6.95 with incredible homemade shoestring pomme frites. My husband's prix fixe was a bowl of delicious gumbo, a very good grilled vegetable pasta dish, cake and coffee. The service was very slow and we had to go inside and just about beg for the check. Maybe that's why its so cheap. But we were in no hurry so we were happy. We are both native New Yorkers but now live in Cambridge, MA. Can you believe that my husband wants to go back to New York for more weekends because the food is more affordable than he is used to in Cambridge?

    Disappointed

I looked up Philip Marie to get the exact address of an all time favorite spot. I decided to read the other reviews and they are RIGHT! What happened to this place? Did the chef Maro stop caring? I wanted to take my husband to the wine room for his birthday but I doubt I'd be back. The escargot appetizer was far too salty and the Lobster Ravioli far too fishy. The service was great but what happened to the yummy factor?

    Delighted & Hooked

After having several friends praise this West Village hot spot, we decided to try it...and boy were we glad we did. We made our first reservation on a very busy Saturday night a few weeks ago. The wait was only 5 minutes and we were seated in a front window table (a great view of this charming part of town.) The waiter was efficient, polite and knew the wine list...a plus for us. Our food arrived with great timing. My appetizer, a new twist on Oysters Rockefeller, was amazing. The Wild Boar was suckulent and flavorful (wraped in smokey pancetta) and the Plank Salmon was outstanding. We barely had room for dessert, but forced ourselves. Don't miss the Pumpkin Fritters. We booked our Thanksgiving dinner before we left. Our entire family had the best Thanksgiving in years...they even gave us "left-overs" for a midnight snack. We'll be back!

Second - & last - visit to Philip Marie

Philip Marie has always seemed an appealing place to dine. It is elegant in an underdone way and has large windows that are perfect for people and neighborhood watching. I first went there very early last year and remembered being impressed by the food and the service. Unfortunately, it has changed, I learned last week when I had the distinct misfortune of dining there. I'm not a particularly picky eater - and it stopped me in my tracks. The decor is still pleasing, if not as eyecatching. The wait staff is young, good looking, whip smart and impeccably professional. You will enjoy every moment in their company and never wish for better service. I applaud them heartily. The problem, unfortunately, arrives along with the food. Actually, it can begin with the coffee. No self-respecting truck stop would bring you this concoction, but they serve it with panache. And fake creamer. Next up was butternut squash soup. This is not hard to make (although getting the peel off is.) Two or three days ago, this substance might have been okay, but I did not feel like donning cape and tights and flying against the Earth's rotation to wind back the clock. That day, anyway. The cornbread crumbs sprinkled atop were salt in the culinary wound. I moved along to the fish, ordered as always medium rare. When it finally showed up, it was not worth the wait. The fish itself was a decent portion, laid over dressed greens and sprinkled a some dried herb. It didn't look medium anything, but it smelled okay so I soldiered on. The dried herbs were as poor a stand-in for taste as you might imagine, and the fish was cooked to teeter-totter firmness, with about the same texture. In case you miss their point, grilled vegetable slices garnishing it were mushy.

    Real good

Totally enjoyed the sunday night bbq special. Ribs/catfish with corn on the cob and cornbread AND choice of two sides for $17. Everything was real tasty.

What has happened to Phiip Marie?

This used to be a good restaurant. Lately it's gone down hill. Which is sad because the owners are such nice folks. But again and again now the salads are drowned in gooey dressing. The stuffed artichoke that had pieces of cold of stringy cheese and flavorless breedcrumbs crammed into and was not good. Another day the plain artichole was so small and artless, you wondered how they dare to charge for it. The chicken was so rubbery, It felt microwaved. We could go on about what isn't right any more with what used to be one of our favoroite places. But, what comes down can go back up, we plead with the Chef to go back into the kitchen and bring is restaurant back to the high standards and delicious food it delivered before.

    Disappointed

First time eating here based on a review. Service was good, but the food was fair at best and overpriced for the quality. The salad was creative but skimpy, the pork chop was not at all tender, the artichoke was very small and plain. To top it off our appetizers came at the same time as the meal, and this after we told the waiter we were very hungry.
